I was cleaning my headphones earlier today, scraping gunk out of the control module with a pin (sexy, I know) when the microphone grille came loose and fell off.
After having a closer look it appears there's no microphone underneath the grille, just an indent in the plastic to hold the grille itself.

Now, I know the microphone is in there somewhere and the fact that the grille is fake doesn't make any difference to how well it works but I just thought this was rather amusing, quite typical of Apple to put something there just because "it looks right" otherwise people might not realize it also acts as a microphone.
