EVO 4G and pay as you go on Sprint?

Anyone know if it's possible to basically buy this phone outright from Sprint and then sign up for some sort of pay as you go plan? I'm assuming this won't really work, and most pay as you go plans that I've seen really suck.

Meh, well that wasn't much help:

"Dear Dave Schumaker,

Thank you for contacting Sprint. I am happy to assist you with HTC EVO
4G plan compatibility.

The HTC EVO 4G is not currently available from Sprint. As of now, we
have no information about the plan compatibility. But since it is a 4G
phone, it might be compatible with data plan. There are some phones
which require data plan:

1. Palm Pre
2. Samsung Instinct
3. Samsung Instinct s30
4. Samsung Instinct HD
5. HTC Hero with Google
6. Samsung Moment with Google
7. Palm Pixie
8. BlackBerry Curve 8530 smartphone (unique rules apply)

These phones systematically require data plan that include the services
needed to fully enjoy the great features on the phone.

We value your business and appreciate the opportunity to address your
concerns. Please reply to this email or visit Sprint.com/mysprint if we
can be of further assistance."

Not much help, you say? But they gave you a list of phones that require a data plan! A list!

But seriously. That couldn't have been less helpful.

You could probably buy it off contract for the full price. I'm not so sure about using it with prepaid though..

you MIGHT be able to buy it off contract, although a lot of these big time phones are usually for sale only with a plan at first.

I just sent an inquiry to Sprint. Here's hoping they write back (...with good news!).

Yeah, I've heard rumors that you can buy the phone off-contract, which would be cool. That said, do off-contract phones work with a Pay as You Go plan? I'm not too familiar with how these types of plans work. I know AT&T used to support that with the iPhone (though I don't believe they do this anymore).

Na, that would be far to awesome. The Tel-Co's just don't get it yet. Here's hoping I'm wrong = www.engadget.com/2010/05/06/sprint-virgin-mobile-a...
