After going to the beach to read with my PRS-300, I noticed the screen would wash out in direct sunlight upon page refresh. If i shadowed the device during refresh, the issue wasn't present and the ink would remain of proper contrast.
Here are two links to two threads, pertaining to similar scenarios with Sony Readers:

Wondering who else has had this problem. I contacted Sony and they're offering a Refurb, but I've only had the Pocket Reader a month, a refurb sounds disappointing.
I haven't had problems with it in the city though, so i'm wondering if it's the strong UV that was present at the OBX. Some theories about the particles losing charge b/c of the UV have been thrown around.
Thoughts?

E-ink Screen Washing out in Direct/Strong Sunlight.
Seeing that you mentioned that it only happened at the beach, I remember reading somewhere, that the device actually has "preferred temperatures" and is recommended only being used in temperatures less than 95°
That might be why
