Doesn't it just piss you off when people call all Android devices "droids"?
It's the equivalent of saying "iTouch" in place of iPod Touch. But do you think it's okay to call Android sets, "Androids" (ie Which Android is that?) or is it just as bad?
As long as I know what they're talking about, I don't care if people call them Rubins, let alone anything else.
It's kind of bothersome, but usually I know what people mean. Considering there's about 4 different Droid devices out there, they might have a point though (Droid, Droid 2, Droid X, Droid Eris).
The "iTouch" just sounds funny, but I can see what people are trying to do there -- create a portmanteau of "iPod" and "touch." But it sounds ridiculous.
"I love my iTouch."
Awkward...

I do hate this, and I correct it every time. People often confuse and don't understand that Android is an operating system, its not a set of phones from a certain manufacturer. They get very confused about it, if they know what they are talking about fine, but most usually don't.
As for the people who are speaking as if Droid is only Motorola, did you all forget the HTC Droid Incredible and the HTC Droid Eris?

This is different. iPods have clearly dominated the MP3 player market to the point where signs in your local Walmart will say iPods rather than MP3 Players. I like to make the distinction whether something is a real iPod or just a knockoff/Sansa/Zune, etc... but it's clear that iPod is a more recognizable term for MP3 player to the general public.
As for phones, you don't see signs saying iPhone in place of a phones section in a store. I don't really mind people calling them Android's as much now just so that they know what it is but Droid is just crossing over that very thin line.

Remember, of course, that Motorola has to acknowledge George Lucas and Lucasfilm in the fine print of every Droid contract, something that HTC, Samsung and LG do not have to do because they slapped different names on their devices. I don't care what you call your Android phone, but the lawyers at LucasFilm care a great deal about such things.
It's not really Verizon's fault. They are just the wireless carrier. Motorola, the hardware manufacturer, is behind the "Droid" branding campaign. Verizon has no trouble selling the LG Ally and plenty of Samsung Fascinate android phones and clearly indicating they run Google's Android OS. I believe it is Motorola that is branding all of their Android devices as Droid--2/X/Pro. The only other hardware company I can think of that slapped the Droid name on their phone is HTC with the Incredible. Are there any other non-Motorola or HTC phones specifically branded as "Droids"?
Verizon came up with the Droid brand and marketed all their phones that way.
It doesn't bother me all that much. Sure the nerd side of me cringes a bit, but not everybody is as informed on the make and model of every new device that gets released as geeks like us are. We all say things just as stupid concerning fields we are less well informed in from time to time. In the end you know what they are talking about so does it really matter? You can try to educate them of the proper name of the phone, if they really care, or just let it slide and go on with your day.
Yes, this is a pet peeve of mine. Even more annoying is that there are two distinct entities: the Droid phone from Motorola and Droid series of phones on Verizon. I've taken to calling the Motorola Droid the "Droid Droid" because technically, that's what it is according to this set of rules.
It's like Verizon's goal is to confuse the branding. And I'm not sure creating confusion in the marketplace is a smart decision. Usually you want your brands to be as clear and distinct as possible.

Verizon IS behind the Droid names on their phones, and it has worked. No one really knows Android, but instead thinks Droid is the only Google phones. It is generic Verizon Marketing mumbo jumbo, make it seem like they are the only ones with said product. They did a great job, and I hate them for it.
