Do you name your computer? If so, what do you name it and why?
My current MacBook Pro is named "Meditatus" - which is Latin for reflecting upon something or pondering. I figure that my computer plays an integral part in making me think about new things or conveying my thoughts.
This is actually a name I've used on my last few laptops, stemming back to when I worked on my thesis in college.

I just remembered this rather off-colored comment on reddit that struck me as pretty amusing:
"I renamed my iPod 'The Titanic' so that when I plug it in, iTunes tells me 'The Titanic is syncing.'"

Yes. What: They're named using their asset identifier. Why: They're named using their asset identifier.
I've realised that since I literally replace laptops (if not desktops) in bulk more often than I replace underwear, cute names aren't actually that useful.
However the recession and its knock-on effect means that I hope to keep the machines I'm buying now / bought last year for 2 years - something I haven't done since, oh I dunno, the mid-90's. So who knows, things might change - it might become 'My Precious 001' 'My Precious 002' etc :p

So far I've only dubbed my 4TB Open Solaris-based Raid-z box "Skynet," with the appropriate logins, (miles dyson, natch), and have skinned the OS to match its name. Lately the theme has extended such that my ssid is "Cyberdyne Systems."
And yes, I personify skynet all the time, it sometimes scares me; "Oh skynet has that, check it out."

My MBP is named UFO right now. I don't remember why—I thought it was named Moonbase. Anyways, I named everything on my network after places and vehicles in the UFO TV series.
Previous laptop: Moonbase
Airport Express: SID
Airport Extreme Base Station: SHADO HQ
iTunes share: Sky One
Also, all of my hard drives have been named after fruits.

when I first joined my roommates, everything on their network was named after Lord of the Rings characters. I stood in defiance and named my desktop Morpheus and laptop Neo... I love both series, but the tech-ier one is definitely cooler and speaks to me much more than any hobbit ever could!! :P
I wanted a naming scheme that could scale and whose names were descriptive.
Names of characters from Futurama is fun but not scalable since there are a finite number of characters. The names also describe the comptuers/servers either by physical appearance or role. For instance 'abyss' describes (exaggerates) the storage capacity of a large file server.
I choses a similar scheme for my office but we use astronomical objects as opposed to mariine.

I name most of my devices after robots.

My MBP doesn't have a name. It's just the Mac
My Desktop is called Monolith. The P180 case reminds me of 2001's monolith.
HTPC Recorder is named Deramus... Pull out the constanants and you get DRMs (when purchased, CableCard HTPC recordings were DRMed).
HTPC Client is called Libertine... Becuase with the CableCard firmware update from last year, now I'm free to watch those recordings on a second computer.

For my computers and gadgets I follow a general theme: members of the animal kingdom. Each machine has a unique [animal] name identifying it at its current state. If a machine is upgraded (e.g. more RAM) it is designated a new name that is from the same animal family. When I have duplicates of the same gadget, I append a cartoon character to the name.

I used to use really original names for my laptops, like "HP_ze5170", or "HP_dv9260nr", but last year I built a tower system and named it "THE_WOPR" after the coolest fictional computer ever.
