Do you disable SenseUI?
I've been leaving Sense running since I got the Eris back in January. I personally feel the appearance of the phone looks much cleaner and sleeker than running the default Home. As for speed, I've noticed very very very slight speed improvements by disabling Sense but not enough to make me disable it full time.
I've tried running with normal home and, while it does seems marginally faster, it's not enough to justify not having the persistent phone control. In addition, I find that Sense's screen to screen swipe is much smoother than normal home - without Sense, I find that I need to really swipe far more aggressively to get it to the next home screen.
