Discuss the iPhone 5 / 4GS announcements here!
I'll be posting live from Apple HQ here, don't miss it: live.gdgt.com/2011/10/04/live-apple-iphone-5-event...
This is more of an opinion on the overall state of the iOS/iDevice market but I believe it ties in directly to the current announcement.
The announcement of the iPhone 4S is in every sense an incremental upgrade. The increased speed, graphics, and voice control bring the iPhone on par with current competitors and will surely be surpassed soon, possibly as soon as the Nexus Prime announcement. The important thing is, no one cares. At least no one who intended to buy an iPhone or currently owns an iPhone.
It should be no shock that the average consumer, despite our geek desires, really doesn't care about specs. They care about performance or the perception of performance. With that in mind, I personally don't know of a single iPhone 4 user who thinks their hardware is slow, or behind the times. Even the larger view that I have been able to gather thinks the iPhone is more then sufficient and rarely do I hear of people regretting ever buying an iPhone. That isn't to say there aren't people who regret the purchase, it just isn't that common, IMHO.
From the geek community however, I hear complaints all the time. I am one of them. I wan't more access to my phone then Apple gives. I want to get apps away from the App store. I love the idea of having different hardware manufactures that let me distinguish my phone from another. The reality is however, most people just don't care.
Perhaps the biggest aspect of the new iPhone is the launch of iCloud. iCloud will play an instrumental role in Apple's future plans for their "Unified" vision. If iCloud rolls out successfully, it will appear to individuals that all of their content is everywhere without them having to do anything. From the perspective of my parents or my wife, that is fantastic. They don't want to think about thees things, they want it so "It just works", pun intended. This type of functionality is something I fear the other manufactures are missing, expect Amazon. They also seem to get the idea that the average person puts more emphases on the ease or very least perceived ease of use with a product.
Due to these reasons, Apple has lots of time to add larger screens, LTE, holographic displays, and dog whistles, and given the general public perception of Apple, even if they do it three years after their competition, it will be seen as revolutionary. For better or worse, that is the current world view, it may change over time, but for now, Apple can wait another year to "Hit it out of the park" as it were.
In closing I would say that all the technical advancement in the world means nothing without proper execution, both Apple and Amazon have shown this time and time again.
P.S.
I am a very happy Windows Phone user, and will be even more happy when I get an HTC Titan.

I agree. Does the device do what you want/need it to do well? That is the question. Truthfully, I need a bigger display. It is just a physical necessity because my vision isn't that great. The retina display helped because it made tiny print more readable, but it didn't help me enough. Windows Phone is doing a superb job optimizing their software, as does Apple. I use Android, and have a dual core phone with 1 GB Ram. Truthfully? Android needs a LOT of power. They optimize their code, but the carriers and the manufacturers booger them up with crapware and proprietary apps that cannot be removed, much to my personal dismay.
It depends, I think, on you. Are you happy with the iphone 4 screen and form factor or do you find yourself thinking how nice it would be to have a larger display? If you do a lot, or would LIKE to do more web browsing/reading on your iphone, you may want to wait. I think Apple assumes that anyone wanting a bigger display is just going to get an iPad. As much as I enjoy the iOS platform, it is difficult for me to use on the iphone simply because it 1) has a relatively small display and 2) does not have text reflow/resizing ability. It is easy enough to zoom out and read smaller print on the iPhone, but not so easy to constantly move the viewable area back and forth everytime I come to the end of a sentence. Personally, I would wait for the iPhone (presuming it is coming) with a larger display and hopefully text reflow.

"What? No iPhone 5? OWNED."
This came from an HTC / Android user.
That POS..
My retort:
Almost.. lol. The iPhone 4S is everything we've asked for. The only thing feature that separated the two, was a sleek, Macbook Air styled redesign.
8MP camera that shoots faster, and has a faster lens, than most point and shoot cameras, let alone on cell phones. HD video @ 1080p, FASTER 4G "LTE" than any cell phone on the market including the new HTC's & Samsung's like the Galaxy. There's TONS more..
It is, as of the 14th of October, the most advanced smartphone on the market by comparison. And with iOS5 coming out on the 12th, It's going to have the most advanced Operating System as well. It already does now (especially without any fragmentation of OS or of the devices themselves), but now it will be way ahead of the game, allowing (as usual!) all the other smartphone manufacturers to just copy and paste features on their own "phones."
: ) Apple>Smartphones
Sincerely,

So while i was expecting something big from apple. Im rather disappointed. A lot of these features and specs have been available on android already. While apple may do them better in my mind they are playing catch up. Also does the 3 models of phones with iOS 5 create fragmentation? I think it does.
Okay, I see what your saying now. I don't believe, personally, that facetime and voice control would be considered fragmentation since as far as I know, you can't access them for programming. The camera can be accessed but that is different.
As for the 3G, that phone is now four generations old but I suppose it does offer slower hardware, so in that case I can see the fragmentation argument.

Why are people upset it's called iPhone 4S? Does it really matter what they call it? 4S 4G 5 - who cares?
It's not the name that's disappointing. It's the lack of significant differences between the 4 and the 4S. Sure it has a better camera and faster processor. But unlike the move from the 3G to 3GS, those aren't really aspects that date the 4S's predecessor all that much. One thing the iPhone 4 does lack by today's standards is a decent sized screen for a top tier smartphone. Which was something I think a lot of people were hoping a new form factor would take into account.
Also, keep in mind that most people following this announcement already have an iPhone 4 or similar to tier smartphone and are looking for a good reason to upgrade and renew Reid carrier commitments. A minor spec bump doesn't really provide that.
Lastly, these are spec sheet upgrades from a company that is known for showing how little specs matter to the end consumer. People look to Apple products to excite inspire and excite them, and the 4S doesn't really do either.

Personally, I'm pretty disappointed. If they had announced this back in June it probably would have been fine, but by pushing it back to October I was expecting something more. Half of what they showed are just iOS5 features that I'll already get on my iPhone 4.
I'm sure on a spec sheet the 4S looks great compared to the 4, but Apple is supposed to be the company that goes beyond spec sheets and gets me excited about their product, and I can't say I'm very excited about the 4S. Certainly not excited enough to make it worth spending $200 and locking me into my carrier for another 2 years.

The iphone 4s sounds like a great little phone, and it is by no accident that I use the word "little." Seriously, as wonderful as this new offering by the Cupertino Clan sounds, how many people (not dedicated Apple fans, which is great if you are one by the way) will choose an iPhone 4s over the Samsung Galaxy S II with a much bigger, Super AMOLED + screen with expandable memory over the iphone 4s? Google has A LOT of catching up to do in regards to speech interaction, but Apple still has a lot of catching up to do with screen size. Apple makes the most of their 3.5 inch screen. I wouldn't even look at an Android with a 3.5 inch screen because Android cannot make it work, but they don't need to. And the race continues!
Dudes! You did it great! Was a great experience to be tuned to you and at the same time discussing in here! Big Congrats!
Siri? I think they called it like this because is easier for a computer to recognize a voice command started with this "magic word"!
Who decided that a voice controlled Siri demo would be a non-livestreamed event?
Yes excellent coverage again Ryan. Should be proud. A bunch of other sites went down and you only went down for like a couple seconds. I luv this site.
to all who doubted my early early articles regarding Sprint and iPhone 5 and ATT and Verizon with just the iPhone 4S you are forgiven you want good tech new scrounge the financials not the tech rags you only get rumours that way
EXCELLENT COVERAGE! YOU DA MAN!
****Great fireworks show, but no finale!*****

Such garbage. I cannot believe how weak this keynote was. Fuck Tim Cook. He doesn't know how to please. Where's the 5? Nowhere. Just a fucking 4S. Sweet, but no CIGAR.
UGH. *Hissy fit*

Is it really that serious that you would pick one of 69 replies and complain about profanity? From what I can see, there is a baby in your profile photo, but It's not a child's account now is it.
Find something else to focus on, such as your grammar. Ending-punctuation always goes inside the quotes, under any circumstance.
While we're at it, I might as well throw you some punctuation techniques from the World Wide Web.

"Put a question mark at the end of a sentence that is, in fact, a direct question. (Sometimes writers will simply forget.) Rhetorical questions (asked when an answer is not really expected), by the way, are questions and deserve to end with a question mark:
How else should we end them, after all?
What if I said to you, "You've got a real problem here"? (Notice that the question mark here comes after the quotation mark and there is no period at the end of the statement.)"
There you have it. I've also found a link to the webpage in which I've received that information. It should help a lot kid, here you go: grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/marks/question.htm

1) I'm not complaining about profanity. Feel free to use as many curse words as you like/ I was focusing on the direction of your dislike/hissy fit towards Tim Cook, to which I disagree with.
2) Sorry for not making grammar a priority online. I sincerely do ... /s
3) Out of the 69 comments, yours caught my attention. You should be happy, isn't it what we all expect/want when commenting online? For someone to reply and read what we write.
4) I have a right to my opinion
5) Have a good night

I hear ya man. There was some good and bad energy there.
That's fine if you disagree with what I said but you didn't just disagree..
Was a judgement. All good though. I come in peace.
Anyone is entitled to think and say whatever they want. Wherever, whenever. Which sucks, sometimes. Sorry I offended you if I did so.
