Dell Studio XPS 16 Vs Dell XPS m1530 Vs Macbook Pro

I am debating which I want to get, I'm a student, so not a crazy amount of money available to spend and I know that any of these machines may cost me around $1600-$1700. I just want to know your guys' recommendation. If I do buy a Macbook Pro, I am planning on putting Win7 on it and using that almost exclusively. I would like a good battery life and good amount of power, something around 2.5GHz. I am going to be using it as my main machine. I will also be connecting a 2nd monitor while I'm at my apartment, in addition I'll be playing a few games, mainly stuff like Left 4 Dead and other Steam games. Help is appreciated, and I have about a month before I have to purchase my machine for college. Thanks!

Well, I personally haven't messed with many Mac machines but the Studio XPS 1640 is a great computer. I have it running windows 7 and it runs very nice. Beautiful screen, quick processor, and pretty good video card. As far as battery life......I would recommend getting the 9 cell and undervolt/underclocking this rig if you get it. I can only get about an hour to an hour and a half with the 6 cell (screen full brightness, back-lit keyboard off, bluetooth off, wifi connected).

Yea, battery life is something I'm really worried about, I don't want to have to plug it in all the time.

I recently got the studio xps 16, and I'm really happy with it. The processor was about the only thing I upgraded (2.4 GHz) and it's working nice. The backlit keyboard is great, and overall, it's just a very attractive laptop. I got the standard battery with it, and I can get about 3 hours on a ful charge, which isn't bad, but it's nothing to brag about too much. The only thing I'm missing on this laptop is the number pad. Other than that, I'm glad I picked this laptop.

Wow! 3 hours of battery life? I was afraid I'd get 1-1.5 hours like Uncompliant. What are the specs on your's?

the one i was gonna get has about 5 hrs, but it is more expensive, for way less specs. that's what's making me hesitate, also i'd be putting Win 7 on it.

you're dumb if you believe the claims that Apple makes... Every company lies about how much battery life their laptop gets, they test it in the most unrealistic conditions....

I work in a university tech department and I have never gotten more than 3.5 hours of battery from a macbook pro(i have used 4).

Then again I am actually using it, but not processor or hdd heavy applications, just web/word/updates.
(Updates maybe hdd heavy)

But I tend to like the keyboards on Dells better, although I haven't tried the new studio or xps.

Ok, thanks, I think that pushed me over the edge to get the Dell. The only things I really liked about the Macbook Pro was that it was thin, had a large trackpad, and had a really good battery life. And I'm not going to pay just for a large track pad and a little bit thinner computer.

3 hours? O teach me sensei of the battery life!! I'm only getting an hour and a half off of a full charge on balanced battery settings. The only way I could get 3 hours is if I put it into hibernation ^_^.

I do not know about the battery life as I always use my XPS 16 at home. However, I can tell you this is a Great Machine. I love it's display and can certainly recommend it.

i love my studio XPS. it is quick the upgraded screen is the best ive ever seen, and the graphics card is good enough to play crysis when you turn down the resolution a notch or 2. i love the facial recognition software, even though it doesnt work about 20% of the time, it is really convenient when it does work. i have the 9 cell battery, and the 2.4ghz processor, and the battery seems like it lasts forever, though i havent realy timed how long it lasts. the one issue though is it can get pretty hot, but not so much that you worry about overheating.

I bought a M1530 instead of Studio XP 16 because the starting price of M1530 is cheaper.
That means I can add more RAM and get a 64 bits vista. Moreover I prefer its palm rest design as compare to studio xps 16.
I know M1530 FSB speed is slower but I think I can endure it as compare to dirty palm rest. cheers
