Dell stops selling the Streak

Looks like another tablet bites the dust. Dell just announced that they'll be discontinuing sales of their Streak tablet.

Is it a sad day for tablets, or is this long overdue? It looks like 79 people on gdgt have the Streak and it had an average rating of 4.0. So, it doesn't seem like people were unhappy with it -- it just didn't sell well.

Is there anything Dell could have done better with the Streak?

The Streak just never made sense and I don't think Dell had any marketing behind the product to push it to people. It was too large to comfortably used as a phone and didn't have the pixels to push it into true tablet territory (it has the same 800 x 480 resolution of most high end phones and not the 1280 x 800 of most Android tablets).

It was too small for a tablet and too big for a phone. It was also rushed to market before Android had launched an OS optimized for tablets (some would argue that they still haven't). I think it was a product that had no place in the market; there is a reason why phones are hovering around 4" and tablets at 7" and up. The 5"-6" range is a no-man's land, a black hole where technology goes to die.

It's in no way a sad day for tablets. The product never sold well and it's been out for almost a year now anyway (over a year in Great Britain), so they gave it a good try. The form factor just doesn't make sense yet. The only way a 5" screen is going to work is if the entire face of the phone is a screen and there's little to no bezel. It would have needed Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich for that, though.

At 5" plus the extra plastic, though, it was too big for a phone* and not worth getting for a separate tablet if you already have a 4" Android phone.

*I say it was too big for a phone, but I should amend that to say "for most people." I'm sure there are plenty of people (more than 79) who found that this was a perfect size for them. I, for one, can certainly understand the appeal of a giant screen for typing with my huge thumbs :)

I think its scary for the ones that buy the tablets that go away. I waited so long to get one and I went with the thrive. Its always on my mind should I have just go a Ipad some price but I like android so I just dont know.
Now people who picked up the streak maybe it was a bad buy looking at Ipads and the lead to the dell at say best buy to sell the new thing. But for people like us on this site we look around before we pick something. I know there have been many times I have been told that a product maybe better then the one I came in to look at.
When I see the Iphone users and thing I bet a Ipad is right for them then think about my mom, dad, and grandparents the Ipad is the only way to go. So is it a sad day for tablets maybe but I am standing at my desk working on a Android app for my tablet so maybe that what it takes and to make good apps!!

It's about time it wasn't very competitive or desirable.
