DELICATE SCREEN!!! - Mine cracked

I didn't drop my Nexus. I didn't sit on it!!!

Not sure what happened really. It wasn't 2 weeks of owning the little guy and I noticed in the top left corner a hairline crack. I didn't do any physical damage and I've never treated a phone with so much care before. It really bugs me because this should not have happened.

In my searching the tubes, some people have been quoted various prices to replace the screen. I was told $275, but I've seen $250, $240... Hmm. odd. There is an outlet in Dallas near HTC which will fix the screen.

Personally, I feel there is a lack of integrity in the construction of the screen and so I'm giving mine up. Sadly there's nothing I can do except return it to HTC since I'm still in the 30 day period (Only in California). I hope this doesn't happen to any of you.

BE SUPER CAREFUL!!

I bet that the $275 is for the glass and the LCD. If just the glass is broken, try looking for a glass replacement kit. Something like that should run ya about $50 to $75 instead of $275.

CRACKED SCREEN here too... 35 days after purchase. HTC will not stand by the product and repair it. They are playing games at the call center and hanging up on me - refuse to let me speak to a supervisor. Unfortunately, my only recourse is to dispute the charges via my credit card. DO NOT BUY THE NEXUS ONE. The screen is of inferior quality, and HTC / Google do not stand behind the product.

Just two weeks in and you need to buy a replacement part? Is there no warranty?

Yes only 2 weeks!!! Even sadder, I heard someone got their's on the 7th and it broke on the 8th...

there is a warrantee, but it doesn't cover damage to the screen.

So what are you going to replace it with???

Hello Captain Kangaroo.

To start out, I just want to say I used to love your show. For now I'm using the Samsung SGH-a137; I keep going back this to every time something happens, like the time I lost my iPhone 3GS... I wrote a discussion about it here:

discuss.gdgt.com/samsung/sgh-a137/genera...

To be honest, I don't really know what I want. I have 2 little toddlers so whatever I choose has to withstand jumping on, water, bullets, etc..

So for now if you call me, that's what I'm using. It's a like "camping out" and when I'm in a meeting and have to pull it out, it's conversation starter. One benefit that comes with this phone is I have more time... All the time I used to spend looking down and pushing buttons on a little screen so focused on something not in the immediate space I was in. It's weird. Honestly I notice everything, sunsets, my kids, wife, etc.. It how things used to be in the 80's; the good old days!

I seem to be happy with it and that's all that matters. If I change I'll let you know!

Just dropped my Nexus One, not a huge drop either, but the screen completely spiderwebbed cracked all over. I did some research and called HTC. Their rep said anywhere from $129-250 for the cost of the repair.

My local World of Wireless, in Minneapolis has told me that they would get a new screen ordered and have me repaired for $139.00.

Needless to say Im going with the local guys. I'll keep you guys posted as to how this repair goes...

I didn't even drop mine so I was wondering what would happen if someone dropped their N1.
..."not a huge drop..." so it sounds more and more like there is a problem with the glass type specified. Apparently it's not toughened glass. I think the is the biggest shortcoming of the Nexus.

BTW... Google and HTC are still examining my phone and have not come up with a conclusion. They are supposed to determine what the credit back to me will be and if I am at fault or not...

fingers crossed

So this video must really piss you guys off since it makes the Nexus One seem well tested and rugged. www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1sz5c-R9h0

My phone is doing good so far, but I do find it hard to believe the part of that youtube video where they do the drop test.

UPDATE: The local guys ordered a screen which took 10 business days to arrive. They did provide me with a Samsung android phone as a loaner. The technician mustve either ordered the wrong glass or broke the one that arrive. So I had to wait another 10 business days for a second screen to arrive. Needless to say you get what you pay for.

HTC: "Nexus One doesn't go in pockets."
flag this

Hmm.. I don't remember them actually stating that flat out in the manual. Regardless I was uber careful and aways had mine in the protective sleeve and would carry it in my hand. I do remember putting it in my upper jacket pocket, but never in my jean pockets.

UPDATE on returning my N1 > HTC or Google still haven't determined or not if it's my fault or not and will not issue the refund until it's been examined. It's sure taking a long time.

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date on this. Watching HTC handle this issue the way they are, then claiming a cellphone doesn't go in pockets is making me more and more inclined to just get the Samsung Moment. I've never had to deal with Samsung tech support, but that is mostly because the people I know who have Samsung phones (my wife included) have never had a hardware problem. Thanks to your info I am going to do some serious looking at the Moment before I make my final decision.

UPDATE Great news!!!! Google emailed and refunded me in full!! It took a while, but they realized I wasn't at fault and did not cause damage to the phone. A couple of things to note, I live in California and there is a 30 Day law about returning phones and also I returned the phone in the first 2 weeks...

I'll leave you with a warm fuzzy thought. either big brother is very kind watches GDGT and cares about their reputation or they really try not to do evil and are just inundated with refund requests. Either way I'm happy.

... HTC probably needs to update their testing

Curious- Are you getting another N1 or switching platforms/devices?

Hey there a crack has just appeared in the bottom right of my screen. Just below and to the right of the search button. No idea how it happened as the phone was on my desk all day and didn't have the crack in it when I placed it there. I was wondering what criteria Google HTC took into account when they replaced your phone?

Hi Drew.
To answer your question, I've been using a very cheap phone on AT&T with limited google voice and it suits my needs pretty well. One thing to note about a cheap phones is battery life. Now I can leave my charger at work friday and return monday with a charge. It’s nice!

…I’m not sure, but I feel some weird change in the air. Maybe it’s just me, but I just want to wait and see what happens between all the platforms. Smartphone waters are too volatile with so many developments it’s hard to decide. So I'm wading this one out till there are some serious improvements and the battle between Apple, Google and Microsoft is further along. So I’m on a consumer gadget hiatus until things settle down.

Not now, but maybe down the road I feel there is another form factor niche that could exist. Perhaps somewhere slightly larger than todays smartphone, but smaller than an E-reader.

Both my friend and I bought the N1 the day it came out with ATT bands, and his has already cracked in his pocket. He never sat on it, treated it badly, or damaged it, it just sort of broke on it's own. He sent it back to HTC, I'll keep this updated on the status... Honestly I wish I had seen this before I bought the phone, but I guess I'll have to settle for a SquareTrade AD&D warranty (I'm going to guess they will not replace a cracked screen unless you get AD&D, it would be pretty hard to prove it wasn't your fault).

Final update: My buddy tried to get them to let him return the phone since it was obviously defective and they weren't going to fix it, but HTC refused. He tried to get his credit card to credit him the money back for the phone under the premise that they sold him a faulty product, and at first they did. Later they contacted him and told him he might be better off paying to fix the screen, since they found that it expressly excludes screen problems in HTC's warranty, which could be trouble if HTC contests it. So he wound up paying the $125. Very disappointed in HTC.

20 cm? really? That's terrible! Thanks for posting your photo. :( I'm sorry to hear that. A drop that small seems too small to create such damage. I never dropped mine, but I have dropped iPhones and from much further on concrete leaving it with a couple scratches but nothing else. There is a place mentioned above located in Texas which will fix the screen for cheaper than HTC. Good luck.

Had my Nexus now for approaching 3 months
Never cracked a screen before in my life. One minute it looked fine - the next I took it out of my pocket and the was a spiderweb effect in the upper right corner of the screen below the upper glass section? (Right description?)
Blue liquid was oozing out.

Eventually after 4 or so hours I couldn't see the screen so was un-usable.
Phoned up HTC today and hoping they'll repair it for Circa £100

Going to get an industrial protective case for it now!!
