Discussion about
Deciding between the Nook and the Kindle. Anybody have experience with both? Is there a way to just take notes on either of these? What's the reliability?
I also don't want to be locked into one E-book store, what formats do either of these support?
I've had a Nook since shortly after the 1.3 software release, and recently bought the newer $130 wifi Kindle for my brother. Overall I think the contrast is SLIGHTLY better on the new Kindle, and it's definitely lighter (weight-wise) than the Nook.
The Nook on the other hand I think benefits from the lower touchscreen navigation, since the buttons can be anything, and I think it gives the device a cleaner look. It feels like a more flexible device, but I'm an Android fanboy. In that regard, the Kindle feels a bit like an iPhone, and the Nook more like a Droid.
Both are nice devices, but I would let which vendor you prefer guide a lot of your decision - Amazon vs. Barnes and Noble will play a lot into how you manage your library, but if you focus on not buying from either and just buy ePub books from third parties you should be fine with either one.

The Kindle does not currently support the industry-standard ePub standard.
There are converters for making Mobi files or PDF files out of ePub files but the formatting and functionality of the file is obviously harmed slightly when converted (especially since the Mobi format is aging and PDF wasn't quite made for the purpose of ereaders).
I have both. There is no way to just take notes on either and you probably would not want to because of the slow speed of the e-ink.
Both are perfectly reliable. I have not had either freeze up on me. Both are very good reading experiences. With Amazon you are almost guaranteed to be locked into their store. Free ebooks you can sideload or at worst convert, but most 3rd part ebook stores have DRM on them that requires Adobe Digital Editions. THe Nook certainly has its appeals though being connected to a brick and mortar store. I touched on it in my review of the Kindle 3, which you may find useful.
