CrunchPad vs. Apple Tablet

Does anyone know how people will type on these? If the Crunch is $400 and does end up being half the cost of the Apple, would you settle for the CrunchPad or pay more for additional functionality? I hardly ever cruise the internet outside of work or home and was wondering how many of you would swear by these streamlined web devices once they launched.

my assumption is an onscreen keyboard that we attempt to get used to "typing on." There will, however, be a USB port for keyboard input when you're parked in a spot that can use a keyboard, but if you're on the go on screen will have to suffice. it's the sacrifice made.

It sounds like a fine sacrifice actually. But I'm worried about these devices because I currently, on this pc, have about 20 tabs open and jump from page to page to page when I surf. I've got 6 gdgt tabs alone. I just wonder if they can make a device that makes supports very robust web browsing like this.... I'll buy 10 if they can!

Hey coologuy1957,

The CrunchPad does have an on screen keyboard. I assume the Apple tablet will have one as well. From what I have seen the CrunchPads on screen keyboard doesn't look all that great. It looks to funcion in the exact same manner as the default windows on screen keyboard. I hope to see Apple implement multitouch in their tablet as I think it would make the keyboard experience significantly easier. The Crunchpad does have a USB port for what ever you choose to use it for. I imagine the Apple tablet will have at least one USB port as well. I for one am not looking forward to getting used to the on screen keyboard. I am hopefull though, since I said the same thing about the iPhone keyboard, and yet , here I am typing this very message on it. As far as the functionality. I am perfectly fine with a straight to browser OS, if it's executed correctly. I have a desktop with plenty of power to do anythig I want to throw at it and would see the CrunchPad or Apple tablet as my secondary machine. For that, I think it would serve it's purpose. I expect Apple to be charging at least $700-$800 for their device. They consistently try to make %30 off of their devices. Which many I am sure, including myself, are willing to pay for the innovation that Apple often brings to the table. With things like Google Docs and such out there I think that Mr. Arringtons idea of living in the cloud is coming, but is not here quite yet. I hope that I can still stand by these products when they come to market.

I'm very excited about them also. Revolutionizing the way we interact with our web based world is good times indeed. That being said, I don't think I would be an early adopter for this technology. I bought the Wii first day, the 360 once it was available and the PS3 months after when I could get a cheap refurb. I trusted Nintendo and have not been let down at all. My fifth-gen iPod is one of my most treasured devices of all time. I early adopted the Popcorn Hour because it sounded like everything I needed and so far, it has been. These devices will probably take a few more iterations than the iPod/iPhone to get right though.......

Both device too expensive!

At $400 the Crunchpad seems pricey to me, I can buy a Netbook for less and it has a hardrive, keyboard and mouse. At $250 it's competitive, I dont see too many people buying this for $400. I wont.

On the other hand a similar device from Apple, the tablet whatever will most likely be pushing $1000. It will be a larger version of the iPod Touch I guess? Even at $7-800 it's still too much. Anything more than $500 and it's going to have a very small market. $399 and $499 would be very nice price points for the masses I imagine.

But, I still dont know what you'd do with either of these devices when netbooks already fill both gaps.

They are not meant as competitors. Originally the crunchpad was set to come out this summer, now that it's likely on on the same release schedule as the rumored Apple tablet, there will be few who buy both.

Personally, I lean toward the Apple tablet, unless it will require 3G telcom contract. But I am still very excited about the idea of the crunchpad. If it does go open-source we could see some really great mods / custom distros.

It has a decent onscreen keyboard. I think I would still prefer to just carry around an Android device instead. Something like this running the Chrome OS or something similar would be interesting.

A CrunchPad with some apps and movie watching would be sweet. Oh wait, that goes completely against what this is designed for.... Oh well, people want every device to do everything and, really, why not? I mean, you can put vlc on here right? :P

You can run web apps on it, not quite the same I suppose though. As far as VLC goes... I wish. You could run one of the many webplayers that you can upload too then watch them anywhere.

I just want to see more specifics on this thing. I keep hearing rumors and seeing test designs of this thing, but nothing is solid. Now people think there will be an Apple tablet in the works, and I just don't see it happening. When there's some more solid evidence of this thing being manufactured, then I'll feel more confident that they'll actually release this thing (Crunchpad).

At $400 bucks Mike add a hard drive and a SDHC Card slot jessesh.

I'm wondering how long until some one hacks it to its Linux core, adds and HDD so I can put Firefox and open office on this thing...

Seriously All
i need on this thing is A browser and a word process. (No Google docs doesn't count, i Refuse to safe certain things to the cloud.)

I want them to release it as a sweet web tablet, but I want to use it as a sweet open-source movie screen... put one of those mobile hd platforms in it, Tegra/Ion, and make it work!

For all of you that appear to have not done any sort of homework, here is a vid of the last prototype in action:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=jP-0Nce5oTQ&eurl=http%...

I, for one, will be waiting in line at the door the day it comes out. I won't be carrying this with me. I will be setting it up in my living room. How often do I want to look something up quickly or show someone something while sitting around? I don't want to run to the home office, I don't want to squint at a phone, I don't wand to boot up a laptop, I want to grab the "photo frame" propped up in the corner and go to it.

Have you all seen how big it is? Gloriously huge.

It's capacitive multitouch as well.

This thing is perfect, but you have to see it for what it is, not a replacement for a computer/netbook/laptop/phone .

It looked a lot faster and more responsive than I would have thought - bigger too as you mentioned. The part that sucked hard is that on-screen keyboard - the buttons were tiny and even the demo guy looked to have problems. They would need to fix that and put like a $200ish price tag to get me....

When will there be more news on these? Is there any chance it'll be at the Mac event? They should demo the CrunchPad outside of Macworld!

I don't think there as any chance of this being revealed at the Mac event. That is, if you're referring to the one coming early September.

Probably just going to be their usual iPod event I would think.

I think he meant it would be funny as hell to reveal a tablet right out side the doors to the mac event, who ever demoed it probably would survive but it would be funny.

I'm not sure we can call "Fail" yet.

If Crunchpad is $300-400 and the Apple Tablet is $600+ there are lots of people (like me) who will snap up the Crunchpad and wait a bit on the Apple Tablet.

My budget allows for me to pick up a $300-400 gadget once a month without any debate with my wife (lord, responsible fiscal prioritization is one of the things I like least about being an adult). Wheras $600+ is a bigger discussion so before I go down that path I need to ensure it will be worth it.

I'm sure lots of people out there will find the Crunchpad price point more palatable for a device that is primarily for just light browsing vs $600+ for a device that repeats much of the iphone functionality but on a larger form factor. Plus perhaps a few people (like me) who are likely to purchase both eventually.

The Crunchpad won't sell as well as an Apple tablet even at a fraction of its price because it won't be marketed like an Apple product, plain and simple.

Which is better? Of course the Apple Tablet will be better, but at its price I don't think its worth the investment. Same thing goes with the Crunchpad. I'll wait around until these type of tablets become dirt cheap like netbooks, and they run Chrome OS or Android. Then I might think about picking one up. For now, there are a lot of better things to spend my money on, things I'll actually use.

Both of these should come with a very thin slipcase - maybe neoprene or something similar. If you couldn't carry it around easily without worrying about scratching it or someone seeing it and stealing it, it would be kinda worthless. I still use the little leather slipcase my iPod 5th gen came in. Its gotten dirty and a little raggedy but it serves its purpose well....
