CrunchPad is $400 now? Straying away from it's original purpose?
When the idea was hatched for the CrunchPad, it was meant to be a cheap bear bones machine for surfing the web. Now, with what you seem to be it's second raise in price I am not sure that is staying on course for what it was originally meant. The Straits Time is saying that according to Fusion Garage is aiming to get it out by November, but with a $400 price tag. The new specs that have come with this report are rather pleasing, but at the same time I am disappointed to see the price being raised once more for a project that was originally shooting for a $250 price tag and now is only $100 short of doubling that. I for one will most likely still purchase one despite that price tag. I feel that a lot of the people who may have had interest in it originally though may stray away for netbooks that have similar specs and more capabilities. What do you think? Will you still be interested in this if this price tag comes to be, even with the new specs?

Ironically i was just about to post how he got mad that the Straits Time published the story, gizmodo.com/5327108/fusion-garage-crunchpads-comin..., but i think i might shy away from it just because i was looking for something that i could take with me, but the netbook i want is now $100, cheaper if the Crunchpad is going to be $400.
Dammit, I want a sweet $100 netbook already! You may see me sporting around one of those OLPC's if times get really tough!
Yeah the coma was a mistake, i had just gotten home from work and i had been up for almost 24 hours.
Thanks for the link coologuy1957. I was curious while reading the engadget post if this was just another leak by Fusion Garage that Mike did not know about or athaurize. I bet he is pissed since this is not the first time that they have leaked info about the device without his consent. I really do hope that, at least the price, is just rumor. With companies like Acer, Lenovo, and MSI having netbooks running full operating systems for close to the same price and, in some ways, better specs ( 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM, but 160GB HDD) I think the CrunchPad would be hard pressed to compete in that price bracket. I am curious why it would even have the 1.6GHz Atom. You usually only saw that as a higher priced option in mainstream netbooks. If you're simply booting into a web experience, I don't see the need. Hey Mike! I know you're on gdgt. Why don't you come clear some of this up and give the gdgt followers an exclusive on what the facts are? We are the ones wanting your device after all. :)
Sorry, that link was from deinfinityx. Thank you in that case. Thank you too for your comments coologuy1957 anyways. :)
If people knew the launch specs and a price around $250, we would start filling up the piggy bank right now!
Sidenote - my slide out keyboard on my phone would fit in that empty black space on the top or bottom - just sayin.....

I don't think i would be interested either, would probably buy a netbook instead.
Usually I pick up my Ipod Touch for the light surfing and quick look-ups, but toooo small, so often I go to the comp. So instead of buying a new netbook to the family, this would be a nice supplement.

I'm not thinking this would be a worthy netbook replacement but rather something for people who don't want or enjoy a netbook.
Myself, I can't stand using a small screen or a mini-keyboard so netbooks aren't for me. If I'm surfing the web around the house I'm lugging my gateway FX around with me.
So while my wife is happy using the family netbook for 100% of her surfing the crunchpad is still a likely candidate for filling my light surfing gadget void (news reading in bed, quick reference while watching tv, perusing in the backyard hammock, etc.).

When i was doing my research i think he wanted to release a few version, i could be wrong and have no idea where i read that, but there was going to be different models for different prices.
For $400.00 bucks If they don't throw in a HDD of some sort this will be a epic fail.
I've been following this device sense Mike started it. There were good ideas. If this was for the Original price point of $200, then this would be a dream.
But to cost as much as a Netbook ( with XP, or Windows 7) and have less features? dang.
I thought the one USB port was bad, two minimum. The no HDD is even worse. (especially for $400 bucks!) Even if it was only a 16GB SDD that would be awesome. I want access to the Core so i can load Programs to this thing. Namely Firefox, Office, Thunderbird, and a RSS agitator. That would make this a real NETSlate.

I don't think that was the point, it was supposed to be a fastbooted straight into a brower system with limited access to the core, which was why it was going to be cheap. I liked that idea for web browsing and using sites like this for me in the morning.
I think $400 is probably too much for it, unless it handles video well, and not just youtube. It would need media center/Netflix video or a built in video player. If it could run VLC it could still be worth it.
I can easily see myself sitting on the couch or on the back porch using this to watch a movie or TV show as well as web browsing.
If it can't? I just don't see myself paying that kind of money just because it looks cool.

I am really hoping tha this price turns out to be incorrect. If it isn't I really think that this is going to hurt the CrunchPad. It seems, to me, that having a price in that area defeats the purpose of what it was supposed to be. I'm crossing my fingers that this isn't true.
No, $400 is a deal killer for me too. I already have a desktop PC, a laptop, and a netbook (for travel). A can *sort of* justify another computer for around-the-house couch surfing and whatnot, but not at that price. $300 is frankly a little more than I want to pay for a computer with no storage anyway, but I can stretch it. $400 is over the top. Sorry, Mike.
(Also, it's more than a little funny that you got so upset about FusionGarage leaking information. I guess what's good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander, huh?)
Leaving Crunchpad on my "want" list, but just because I like the idea. Don't price yourself out of relevance.

Now... The question, Would you pay $400 bucks if it came with:
A HDD or SDD?
2 usb slots
a sdhc slot.
An express card slot. (making 3G Optional. And with a carrier of choice)
Access to the Kernel to build upon. ( Like the original Open source idea Mike had in the beginning?)
( I'd like Digitizer support too, but that isn't going to happen.)
I think I would.

I doubt it will come with anything more then flash memory, maybe SDD and only because this is just a internet tablet with no desktop to actually use. Now with G.ho.st i would be able to store all my files electronically so this would be just fine for me. I only really want one as a tablet to browse the web with.
watching some movies with vlc, some netflix, and some Hulu would make it for me...
sidenote: as far as the apple tablet, can you even instant watch Netflix on a mac?

It is. It wasn't until about this time last year. If I am not mistaken though it should be compatible with mac now. Unfortunately, right now there is no good way that I am aware of to run Netflix instant watch on a Linux system. I don't see the CunchPad being able to do it because the only way to do it that I know of, and how I do it, is through emulation which is not a particularly enjoyable or convenient solution.
Yeah no support for linux, didn't even think of that since it runs from silverlight. So the crunchpad definitely won't have this.
Unless Michael manages to do something awesome! I'm not holding my breath though.
Yeah me either, but there are ways around it in linux, maybe he can work one of those in.
thats cool... I know silverlight is microsoft's new toy and I wasn't sure if they would let you macky's play with it!! :P
At $400, this becomes an expensive toy... At $300 and below, I think it will start to serve people more in line with their initial plans -as an affordable and extremely portable way to read some web news and do some light computing... (with video!!!)
I agree, but i think regardless of price as long as it sits under $400 i will get one for exactly that, like web news and video.
I probably would too assuming inputting text was total garbage... the text input to me doesn't look very impressive so far... some good text completion and site memorization would really help, but they need to nail the text input!
