Controllers: PS3 vs. Xbox

Every gamer has had the debate at one point or another: which controller is better? Obviously, it comes down to a preference thing and everyone has their own reasons for preferring one to another. What I want to know is, without flaming, why do you think 'your' controller is better?

I will start: I prefer the PS3 controller better because it is more lightweight and feels more comfortable in my hands. I have been a gamer since there were games to be played (yes, I had a Pong!) so maybe the extra two generations of PlayStation had an effect on my feeling this way (please tell me there isn't someone out there that feels the gen 1 Xbox controller was a good thing!). I like having the thumbsticks symmetrically placed the way they are and I have never had trouble with the D-pad like I experience on the Xbox controller. I also enjoy the fact that the PS controllers are USB chargeable with no batteries or battery packs to mess with or, ultimately, fail.

While I use both consoles with equal fervor, the choice of controller is far from equal; the PS3 controller is simply the best for me!

I much prefer the Xbox 360 controller. It more comfortably fits in my hands. The analog placement is much better than on the PS3 controller, too. I find that my thumbs hit each other when the analog sticks are at the same level. Also, the way you have to grip the PS3 controller makes me feel like the thing's going to pop right out between my thumbs and forefingers.

I would say that I prefer the 360 for FPS and action plat form games while the PS3 for racing and fighting games. It's just the way my hand works.

Totally agree with all your points here on the PS controller. The symmetrical sticks are a must for me, it just feels weird when I get on an xbox controller and my thumbs are in different places. I really like the feel of the thumbsticks on the PS controller as well, the rubbery tops and large dome shape to them, they're very comfortable to use. It seems like all the buttons are packed into a tighter amount of space too, where as they're more spread out on the xbox, which is nice.

I believe the tightness of the 360 sticks lends itself better to FPS games... or any games which require very precise controls...

I agree with all your other points though about weight and rechargeability and better D-Pad and buttons... I'm just glad we were blessed with three great controllers this generation!

I like the 360 controller a lot, especially for FPS games. I think the size and heft of the controller feels nice in the hand. The placing of the analog sticks feels a little more natural to me for some reason, too.

I will agree that the USB recharging and the D-Pad are nice on the PS3 controller, though. My main gripe with it is the triggers. The concave feel of the 360 triggers is much nicer.

I like the ps3's controllers a bit, but I prefer the resistance my Xbox thumbsticks and triggers produce. I prefer that resistance so I don't accidentally hit buttons,

I also happen to like the Xbox's shape for the triggers as well, because they're really indented and almost laid out on the bottom like a boats rudder would be, so I have nothing impeding my middle finger to move up into that slot if necessary. I use my index fingers on the triggers, but I have seen in some games I'd need to switch up to middle on triggers, and i like how little I have to adjust my hand to do so.

I also happen to like the Xbox D-pad more, if you use it enough it doesn't make your thumb sore since it's all one button on a rocker, as opposed to 4 different buttons where you're sliding up over the bumps, which makes your thumbs quite sore depending.

One other thing is the expandability of the Xbox controller, I happen to like the chatpad a lot, I've been using it a lot lately and it's nice.

I'm also not a large fan of the PS3's button layout, it feels to scattered for me. And the xbox's layout for thumbsticks is more natural to me.

Xbox 360 Controller:
-I like the asymmetric placement of the thumbsticks because it just feels more natural.
-The higher tension of the sticks provide more precision for FPS games.
-I like the concave surface of the 360's analog sticks as my thumbs wont slip off them as much as the dome-shaped PS3's sticks.
-I like the trigger buttons on the 360 controller over the wider R2 & L2 buttons with their shorter travel distance. However, for some odd reason I do prefer the PS3's R1 & L1 shoulder buttons over the 360's RB & LB.
-And if you're a PC gamer, the 360's compatibility with Windows is more streamline than hooking up the PS3's controller, granted you need to buy the separate USB dongle.

PS3 Sixaxis:
-I feel is too lightweight, and the DualShock 3 only slightly alleviated this.
-Since there's no user-replaceable battery for PS3's controllers, that means when the battery dies out, you're pretty much tossing out the entire controller. I believe you can have the battery replaced by Sony for a fee, but then you're better off buying a new controller.

I've gone through 3 Xbox 360 controllers so far, all with buttons not registering, off-centered analog sticks (characters would be drifting off to the left on their own), and one rage-quitting incident involving me hurling the controller at the floor. My original Sixaxxis and DualShock 3 are still in excellent condition, probably since I don't play as much on the PS3.

thats true about the xbox controller quality....

I notice my analog sticks are starting to go off center and the triggers are starting to squeak. that batteries are a little loose now too and sometimes it just dies for no reason... the DualShock 3 is rock solid in these regards....

I personally think the xbox 1st gen controller id the best ever made. I liked its weight, liked the triggers, and liked the black and white actions buttons. I still to this day miss playing with them. I never liked PS controllers because they feel, to me, cheap. They're so light an plasticy that it feels like I'm gonna break it every time I use it. I like the fact that they use bluetooth to connect and that they charge over usb, but otherwise xbox controller no doubt.

I can say the PS3 controller is far superior to the 360 for one reason. I do not own a 360 and last night I was at my friends house playing Halo. Since I don't own a 360, I couldn't get the damn controller to work properly. So I kept dying. At least that is what I use as my excuse.

I honestly think that in the end controller layout and physical size play a role to some degree, but when it comes down to it, once you use any controller long enough, it is the same stuff. They get the job done.

I prefer the 360's controller:
- It fits my hands perfectly
- "better" analogue stick placement and grip
- Trigger shape that makes sense
- Batteries last longer

i prefer the 360 controller.
despite it being a little bigger and heavier, i believe its the bigger size and the contoured shape that makes it more comfortable. now it all boils down to preference. i was born and raised playing xbox, and gamecube so i prefer the main joystick being level with the buttons, seeming those are the primary functions on the controller.
