Compare to Palm Pre!
I know that many people were hyped over palm pre, but the palm pixi seems sooo much better. What are you opinions on the changes and is there anything you would have wanted to keep? (I personally liked the fact that the pre flipped.)
Even if it is cheap to free i think those losses actually make it not nearly as good. They style is awesome, it looks really good but the lack of those features might turn a lot of people off. Don't get me wrong it would be a great phone for someone that hasn't used a decent smartphone, but for typical smartphone users its a big no.
Definitely would have kept wifi if I were Palm. Also, the screen isn't just smaller, it's a different resolution and aspect ratio meaning that many apps lose 80 pixels in the vertical direction which could cause problems. That part was pointed out to me in one of the other discussions. Also, its slower.
Those are some pretty big issues to try and deal with but since its so cheap, they'll probably still sell a lot of them.

The Palm OS is scalable unlike some other OS's like Iphone OS, therefore everything including apps will looks fine. Yes the screen is 80 pixels smaller vertically, but nothing will be cut off, just rescaled to fit the pixi screen. I dont see this as a problem. Look at blackberrys, just about every device has a different screen size from the next. Its just more options to choose from. Im ok with that.
its not the screen size and scalability. its the fact that it is a different aspect ratio.
things will either get stretched or just not really fit right. when you code with HTML and CSS, you can do some things by percentages of the screen but a lot of stuff gets a definitely size. So when you change the vertical size, some stuff will need to be recoded to fit which, i know can be a real pain from the websites ive coded.

I think this phone will be more than capable for most of its users with its slower cpu vs the Pre. When I first saw renderings of the Palm EOS I was in love with its design. I know Blackberries had this design for years but I honestly can't stand their OS. I've been wanting a nice phone with this form/design factor and now its here (The Samsung Jack is a nice phone as well, just don't like how limited it is with its carrier specific windows mobile OS). The biggest dealbreaker this phone has is the exclusion of Wi-Fi, how dumb can you be not to have Wi-Fi on a smartphone giving what the OS is built around. Not everybody wants to pay for a data plan.
Well in this day and age, with any smartphone operating system, you are going to need a data plan no matter what. It is nice to see how much of an improvement this is over the Centro (thanks to the *full* capabilities of WebOS being on the device). I really see the biggest pitfall of this device being the exclusion of Wifi: a watered down camera and slower processor is totally fine with me to get a awesomely slim phone, and while no wifi in a lower-end smartphone may have been ok a couple years ago, it really should be mandatory for any smartphone.
Yeah, I don't agree. If I were to get a WebOS phone right now, there would be no contest between the Pixi and Pre; it would be the Pre all the way. The Pixi is slower, smaller screen, keyboard doesn't hide away, no wifi (?!?!), it just seems like they wanted to have an entry-level WebOS device, which is good for people who don't want to spend $200 on a phone. Hopefully we'll see more low-end WebOS and Android phones, so that people like my GF who don't care about having a crazy awesome phone can still have a crazy awesome phone ^_^
As far as saying it's way better, I don't get it. It's like all the people saying the PS3 Slim is way better, when it's no different. I think you may just have a case of the new gadget syndrome :D

I don't think that this is nearly as good as the Pre. I also think that this is a great move for Palm. The general public has some idea of what WebOS and The Palm Pre are and I think that someone who walks into a store and sees this for $49.99 or free would be quite inclined to pick it up. Allowing for their platform to get into the hands of more people and thus making the platform more appealing for developers.
eeeexactly. It's not something that most people who visit gdgt will want over the Pre, but it's far from a bad thing. A low-end WebOS phone is probably a far more enjoyable device than most high-end Verizon feature phones. I think the average consumer that doesn't want to fork out $200 for a phone will end up happier with a low-end high-end phone... you know what I mean ^_^
It's good to know that the processing power in this phone hasn't been watered-down too badly:

I'm impressed, for a device that is extremely entry-level and mainstream oriented, this thing packs a little punch :)

Little would be the right choice for it, but i think it isn't that bad of a phone for entry level, definitely better spec'd then the entry level blackberries. It is going to be a popular phone for people that want to get into WebOS but i think the Pre is still the better WebOS phone.
Oh there's no doubt that the Pre will be the better WebOS phone, and you also gave the perfect examples of where this phone is being marketed: to the entry-BlackBerry crowd. Unfortunately, it's not going to escape the HTC Hero, Palm Pre, Iphone, and other leading smartphone comparisions (which annoys me, but it's practically unavoidable lol), but it's nice to see Palm expanding it's product line so quickly, thanks to the flexible programming of WebOS on different styled devices *glares at Iphone*.
Yeah ultimately I think thats what is going to be the downfall of the Iphone is the fact that it is stuck to just one phone. Android, winmo, webos, BB, all will have multiple phones to sell to the consumers, ranging from free to high end phones. The only thing that i can see hindering WebOS is that unless they start pumping out phones as fast as BB does, or offer it to other phone manufacturers like Android is going to ultimately hinder the software.
