coming to the G1 and myTouch?

Will this update be hitting the G1 and the myTouch? HTC has said they are working on a SenseUI update for the Hero so we know that it'll get Eclair, but what about us lowly myTouch and G1 owners of the world? Will TMo be gracing us with the presence of 2.0? I really hope so because it looks awesome. If the Hero can run it, so can pretty much all of the previous Android phones since they have the same processor.

Processor may not be the issue -- not all phones have the same amount of internal storage, and if 2.0 requires a significantly larger amount of space, that could preclude some handsets from getting the update.

According to this article from AndroidandMe.com, it is unlikely the system partition of the G1 will be able to handle 2.0. The myTouch3G should be fine with 2.0 though.

from the various Android blogs I've read the G1 does not have the internal memory to handle the Android 2.0 image, but the myTouch does. G1 owners probably are SOL.

Thats what they initially said about Donut when it first was spotted then they managed to take the image and squash it enough to fit plus some. There was 10mb left after the donut upgrade was applied so that is a lot to work with feature wise. I have my doubts since there is nothing legitimate to go off of since the only running version of 2.0 is on the Droid and the SDK and nothing is on github or ASOP yet so there is still hope./

interesting stuff. im really hoping that the mytouch gets 2.0. The subtle improvements to the GUI and the navigation apps are the big improvements for me. I just hope Eclair doesn't roll in with a huge hit to performance. With mobile OSes, I'm always afraid that new features and such will make even relatively new phones kind of laggy.

I really hope they bring the update to mytouch. I have read that the mytouch only has about the same processor as the motorola droid and they should really give the 2.0 update to mytouch 3G

Its not so much about the processor as it is the memory for the system partition and the mytouch has enough. The problem is getting HTC and Qualcom to make the drivers for 2.0 so it will actually work whihc is more then likely going to happen.

All of a sudden, I feel like getting the G1 the first day it came out was not the great achievement it would turn out to be. Yet, the only reason I would not get the Droid is because I do not wanna be tied to Verizon for 2 years. Any possibility that an unlocked GSM version of the phone will support T-Mobile's 3G network, or even come out at all?

I doubt that a GSM version that will support T-Mobile's 3G network will come out.

If you are going to be tied to a network for 2 years, Verizon would probably be the one to go with. I mean, I'm using TMo now with the myTouch so I'm with them for a couple years but I kinda wish I had waited for the Droid. Not that I don't have coverage with TMo, its actually surprisingly great, but Verizons coverage is so much more extensive.

I read that they are planning to release Motorola droid to at&t so that version unlocked should work with t-mobile.

That and the sholes tablet(Droid with out a keyboard is supposed to be coming to Tmobile as well, 3G and all)

I use a lot of minutes as well as web and tmob gave me unlimited min. I think it would be going backwards to leave tmob for verizon, but I wish I had droid anstead of mytouch now also. It is just a matter of time before they all go unlimited phone/web/etc with Boost mobile going strong, which I hear uses Sprints network.

it will but not on T-mobile's 3G, but then again if you just need a GSM phone with EDGE speed, that should work fine.

How would it not have Tmobiles 3G since its coming to Tmobile or at least the rumor says it will. If it really does come to Tmobile it will have 3G.

here are some unofficial Android 2.0 build running on a G1!

keep in mind its unofficial and totally not optimized, but it can be done!

maybe theyll get 2.0 running on it. im sure some mods will show up with that ability but i have a feeling that TMo is really considering stopping the G1 updates. Ideally they would keep it going until those G1 owners are out of contract but they'd probably like to tempt some out of contract purchases. I know that with the myTouch, im going to be buying a new phone out of contract in a year or so.

I agree, I feel like my mytouch is fast becoming obsolete or at least getting left in the dust!

First post, total gdgt noob, but better late to the party than never showing up, right?!

Up until about a month ago I was of the mind that paying more than $40 a month for a mobile phone was "excessive" since PAYG (no contract) plans were so damn cheap via Virgin Mobile and the initial investment of $13 (stop laughing, that was what I paid for the flip phone I've been using for the past two years) was all you really needed for talking and texting. All the while I've had an ipod touch 2nd Gen that I received as a gift from work last year, and within the first week of using the ipod touch I truly realized how "close-to-the-real-thing" mobile devices have become in comparison to a "real" computer, either desktop or notebook. Sure, I was doing the same shtick that Flight of the Conchords did with their "camera-phone" : www.hbo.com/conchords/img/showyourlove/f... , but I was saving some serious cash compared to the rate you're forced into paying with the iphone. My friends pay $100 a month for the voice and data plan from AT&T after taxes, which in my mind is just crazy. And although I really liked the touch interface of the ipod touch (and therefor the iphone), my MAJOR beefs with it besides the monthly bill and AT&T being the sole U.S. carrier was being forced into using iTunes. Not only is iTunes not compatible with my main PC, an Ubuntu machine, but either it or the ipod/iphone never-ever had the album pics synch up with the proper LP or EP. I'm less of a fan of Apple now than I was BEFORE I received the gift.

So Google introduces a new Open Source (mmmm!) Operating System specifically for mobile phones (maybe mobile devices aka ipod-like mini computers WITHOUT phone abilities) with an uber-cool name: ANDR01D. And after checking out T-Mobile's plans after my $13 cell phone's screen broke, I could get a plan w/ 2 yr contract that's $60 a month INCLUDING the data plan. $70 after taxes. $30 is $30, right? Thats two used XBox 360 games (I can't TOTALLY stick it to Microsoft).

I'll be getting the Motorola CLIQ or the HTC myTouch G3 this week, a Christmas present to myself. And both being the same price, I think the big advantage to the CLIQ is the QWERTY keyboard and the slightly better specs. A 5 MegaPixel camera is an improvement over my standalone, 4 year old 3.2 MPxl camera, and since both are upgradeable via inexpensive miniSD's ,I'll upgrade and do fine with 16 Gigs, twice over what I had on my ipod touch.

The convergence of all these media players and other devices into one device is probably, without a doubt, the biggest PC news since the PC boom of the 90's. We'll all still need our home PC's, after-all, 350 gigs of music is too much for a cell phone, but what flash memory's capabilities have allowed, inexpensively I might add, is the easiest way to carry ALOT of our files with us everywhere, and can be used on the fly. I'm just going to be upset when we're buying Videogame software strictly for our phones to play on our HD TVs. Don't think for a second that the "big 3" Videogame hardware manufacturers aren't looking at specialized apps for specialized phones that will have better gaming control capabilities. The Nintendo GameBoy Advance and the DS(?) both have a little cell phone tech built into them already. It's only a matter of time...

So... I'm still a noob on the site, and I'm still a noob with ANDR01D, but am I wrong with siding with the Motorola CLIQ over the HTC myTouch? Before I read about the CLIQ this morning on CNET, I was gaga for the Google myTouch, but if I'm reading hard specs correctly and price differences as well (aka they're priced the same), I'd do better with the CLIQ, right? The battery life on the myTouch 3G is better though by 100 minutes. But better specs on the CLIQ makes it seem like it would handle the ANDR01D 2.0 upgrade better than the myTouch 3G, or it might not make a difference. I'm looking for some feedback from the gdgt community on this, being how some of you have one or the other (or both).

Don't flame me for writing long post, but I feel I have to in order to get certain points across. Even if it's over a stupid cell phone. :P

Flame you for a long post, not on this site, we value thoughtful discussion. However the OS is called Android, please don't type Andr01d It hacker friendly consumer OS not some unheard of Linux distro. (The keyword being unheard of.)

As for your post I prefer the CLIQ to the myTouch personally, with its 3.5mm jack and QWERTY keyboard it seems like a better option.

Welcome to gdgt.

This should answer everyone's questions about which handsets will be receiving 2.*: androidandme.com/2009/12/news/android-2-...

The short answer is that currently there's no info on the update for the MyTouch and G1.

It'd be nice to see it in my G1 but I'm actually ready to replace mine if only I can see more handsets/smartphones with Snapdragon CPU... or have really good GPU too so it can handle some good games and medias...
