Here are the steps to install Chromium OS on an ASUS eee PC:
1. Download and unzip the .vmdk.zip Chromium OS beta from here:
gdgt.com/google/chrome-os/download/
Click on "Get the Chrome OS image here!" (Not the "get it here" for the USB bootable version.)
2. Download WinImage from:
www.winimage.com/download.htm
Run the program and click DISK - "Restore Virtual Disk Image on physical drive", select a 4GB (or larger) thumdrive from the list then open the .vmdk file. The file transfer will take a while.
3. Put the thumbdrive in the eeePC and press ESC on boot, the select the thumbdrive as boot device. Login as "chronos" with no password. (You can login with your real gmail account later.)
Everything seems to work fine (even the external monitor) on both my ASUS 901 and 900A. Ethernet is active on startup, for wifi, click on the middle icon in the top right corner and select your wifi and enter your key. Press F8 for the keyboard shortcuts. Enjoy.

The wifi on my 901 worked right away. I just clicked on the middle icon in the top right corner (looks like a dot with concentric rings) and selected my wifi ssid and entered my key. Did you try turning wifi on and off a few times? Try checking the /var/log/syslog file to see if the wlan is working and the plugins/wifi.c is enabled. Here are the specs on my 901 (a cheap one from Woot):

I noticed on the chromium developer hardware list that they added a note saying that only certain units shipped with WIFI cards that are supported, mine is not...

Thanks for the steps. I have an Acer AO751h netbook and it works fine with wifi etc.
One thing though, it's really slow and seems to load from the USB to do everything (changing tabs in browser etc) is this the same for everyone and is there a better (quicker) way to use this OS?

Changing tabs on my eee PC is quick. Try reloading the image file or try the smaller "diet" version from:
chromeos.hexxeh.net/

No wifi on my eee 1000 even after a hard reset. Everything else works, tho.
Is there a shutdown command? It seems to shutdown properly by pressing the power button, but after restarting, the browser complains that there was an improper shutdown and asks if I want to restore the tabs.

Hexxeh's latest build fixes the WiFi problem for 901 users (chromeos.hexxeh.net). It works great once logged in, but wifi doesn't work before logging in, so you still have to use the default login indefinitely.
Now that I have a workable Chromium OS on the EEE (which is literally about 20x faster than the XP that it replaced), the big question for me and probably many others is how to change keyboard layouts. Ready-made Chromium installations are great for US residents but for foreigners, we can't use it fully until we find a way to get the OS to match the physical keyboard.

However, I have been using Image Writer for Windows 0.2r23 to copy the IMG file to an SDHC card, and it won't let me copy the image to the internal SSD drive (D:). I know of and went into BIOS on my EeePC, changed to boot from flash drive and it
still boots winblows xp

Installation with Winimage goes well until 99% Then i get the message; "error reading file chrome-os-0.4.22.8-gdgt.vmdk.zip"
Am I doing something wrong? I have also tried to unzip it. Moreover I treid to install on a usb and on a SSD card. On the SSD card it will not even start.

Yes, you need to use WinImage to copy the .vmdk file to the USB drive to make it bootable. It will appear that the USB drive has nothing on it under Windows.

well I guess I got 2 options:
1) Keep trying!, maybe with another USB Flash drive, like a 8GB, instead of a 4GB.
(and yes should of known, under winblows it would act like nothing is on the drive)
Though even with doing that, it still boots into windows(I mean with setting up it to boot via usb drive)

Try pressing ESC as the computer boots, that should bring up a list of the bootable drives. Make sure you click on the USB drive. If the Gdgt file isn't working, try the "diet" version from:

Well the "Esc" does not seem to work, Have tried it several times. So I just go into the BIOS to change the BOOT UP, though maybe that is not working either.

I have been hitting ESC many times before it goes to boot, hmm oh wait? maybe if when you Hit F2 to get the setup part, before going into that, maybe if you hit ESC it will show a boot menu.

well got the ESC thing to work and am on Chromium OS now as I am
typing. Its different/etc, but very cool and has lots of potential.

Will it work with an Acer Aspire R1600? Intel Atom 230 with 1GB DDR2 RAM and 160 GB HD. I also know it can boot from USB drives.

my 701 PC 4G loves it, EXCEPT it won't pick up the webcam. If the drivers for that would work, I'd be full time Chromium.
Next step is to try it on an SD insteard of a USB so it doesn't have a 'snappable' sticking out.

It works on my eeepc 900a. How would I go about getting rid of the old OS? (I can always reinstall it)
Is there anyway to setup Chrome OS on the internal HD in a DUAL BOOT setup alongside Win 7 (or whatever OS of choice?) The install above wipes the entire drive in favor of Chromium, which for a web only OS seems like a colossal waste of space. Ideally I'd like my eeepc to dual boot Win7 and ChromeOS, so I can chose compatibility vs speed depending on needs of the day. Thanks!
