Cheating i5s and i7s

Looking at the iMac technical specs it seems like the i5 is clocked higher then the i7 in my new laptop and the i7 is ridiculous. I thought that the iMac had laptop parts. If thats true is Apple using different processors then are available to most manufacturers, overclocking or lying and hoping the unusualness of the new clock speed specs and some RDF magic hide the truth.

I'm I missing something?

It's quite possible they are getting different parts. However like most spec-hopped Mac gear, you can rest assured that if you start pushing that additional performance, thing will start getting very toasty very quickly.

The core i5 and i7's in the new iMacs are desktop processors, not laptop versions as in the past.
The new 27" enclosure allows for the extra space needed to cool them.

We'll see... Perhaps next May-ish, when things warm up again?

I'm fairly certain it will be an issue down the line - and I'm also fairly sure that the Apple 'enthusiasts' will brush it aside as a minor problem and it'll be barely a blip on the tech news landscape.

And I am fairly sure you are speculating out your posterior.

lets see.... hot screen, hot processor, hot RAM, huge 1 or 2 TB hot hard drive, hot dvd drive, and super thin enclosure.....

yep, purely unfounded speculation....

As you are not using one, yes it is purely unfounded speculation.

When you assume, you mostly just make an ass out of you.

I'd also speculate that in addition to the larger size allowing for better ventilation, the back of the iMac now being aluminum instead of plastic would help dissipate heat, and not insulate.

I am totally NOT a Mac guy but the new new 27" core duo iMac seems like a powerhouse with a huge screen

Based on the iFixit teardown (www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iMac-Intel-27-Inch/1236/1 ), the 27" uses the LGA 1156 socket with the Lynnfield *desktop* i5/i7 chips, not notebook chips, so the speeds are right.

These chips are 95W TDP, hotter than the old Core 2 processors, but the huge heat sinks and 3 fans can deal with that I assume.

I'm totally lacking as a gdgt user as both the iMacs available are bigger than my main TV :(

I'm not trying to be mean or pile on, but I'm just curious - why don't you have a TV?

I mean, I'm also a little confused because you show you have an Xbox 360 and Wii and original Xbox.... and you had a bunch of older consoles... what did you play them on?

Other peoples TVs, friends, family, and my laptop in a pinch.

I'm 19 I don't have the space. If anything i'll pick up a nice monitor or one of those new touchsmarts. Also I'm picking up a G51J soon, so no I was saving for that. Now IDK.

@Dpmt - again, no offense, but I really don't understand the not enough space comment either... all of these TVs, even my big ass plasma, are less than 3" thick and are wall-mountable which, space-wise, makes them all but invisible! Just a quick price comparison on wal-mart.com yields models from 22" and $200 to 32" and $300.... I have a 32" samsung in my medium sized bedroom and it is more than adequate and takes up basically zero space because I just put it on top of a dresser... I really just want you to have a TV! :P I guess all of my entertainment goes through TV, but you seem to get by... just trying to show you some options...

Let me make this clear then I don't have space. Wall space, floor space, nothing, I have head room left and I use every inch of that.

well, you already stated you were saving for a monitor and these TV's are no bigger than that...... good times though nonetheless.....

I'm in no position to spend money right now. I was just saying i'd rather have a monitor at this point. Unless you know of any touch enabled or WQXGA TVs.

its cool... I guess you're not a big sports fan... thats pretty much the only reason I have cable any more is for NBA and NFL games......

@Dpmt Good point. I reserve the right to complain though. It helps keep me sane.

@coologuy1957 I'm saving for a Samsung right now. If only my girlfriend would understand that holidays are not important and a nice big TV with surround sound clearly is!
