Canada invades gdgt live Seattle + Our awesome name tag!

Fellow gdgteer krisRm and I are driving 800 miles across beautiful mountains and lands tomorrow to attend the upcoming gdgt live in Seattle. (route here: goo.gl/maps/XXRzg )

We made this plan back in February and being outside-the-box thinkers, we wanted everyone to know we were there. So I thought that we should have some sweet name tags. The idea was pitched and then the rest became a blur. We ended up constructing possibly the best name tag ever.

(Early-ish prototype images, find me on the floor for the final product!)

In the spirit of "live" for gdgt live, we wanted something that updates live throughout the event. This means RP, number of followers, along with other statistics are all constantly changing.

You will be able to scan the QR code on the name tag to follow me and see the numbers update instantly*. However don't let that stop you from following me/us prior to the event. I have some pretty cool ideas and posts!

This hasn't been field tested. We have no idea how much it will cost us to run (data costs), how long the battery life is, and how cell reception is in the convention centre. That being said, we are pretty excited about this. (Assuming we can get in, the post here worried us a bit: gdgt.com/discuss/message-to-attendees-of-gdgt-live...)

I realize the gdgt staff are going to be extremely busy, but we love the community and would love to meet Ryan, Peter, and the rest of the staff and users on the show floor. So feel free to stop us and say hi :)

-Travis + Kris

*This depends on the AT&T network reception of course (which we are hoping is somewhat reliable. We hear horror stories up in Canada about them).

This is totally awesome. I, unfortunately, won't be there to check it out in person but hope it goes well! Have a safe drive!

There will be blogging! And the software and hardware design is all open source (Travis and I developed it "from scratch"), so if you visit code.google.com/p/live-nametag/ you can check out the code! (hardware design is currently not posted) Thank you!

The event was really great. It was nice to meet the team and there were many interesting booths. Here are a couple snaps of the final thing.

We ran out of battery at one point, but were able to charge it and get it working again

Yeah, good to meet some of the faces on here! If anyone's interested in the hardware or software we used to make this, hit up code.google.com/p/live-nametag/ . There's a hardware diagram and everything!

As the Canadian rep of the gdgt team (appointed by process of elimination) - you good sirs, have made our country proud. Wish I could be there (especially to see this gadget you made) but I'm glad the homeland will be well represented. Reminder: pack enough poutine and Tim Hortons.

This is really cool! Please make sure you introduce yourself if you see me. I'll keep an eye out at the table for the name tag.

it shouldn't be hard to spot 2 guys that will be looking as classy as us, but if we recognize you Frank we will definitely say hi.

10 minutes until roadtrip time! see all you on the other side :)

We appreciate all the support

Hot tip: add a "free beer" sweepstakes for QR code scanning peeps.

Then you can hook up a breathalyzer to it too.
