Can we really call it the 5th gen iPod Touch and 7th gen iPod Nano?

Do the iPod Touch and iPod Nano announced at the iPhone 4S event count as a separate generation? The iPod Touch simply adds a white version and the iPod Nano got a software update which the 6th generation is also getting.

We were just having this discussion this morning.

It looks like the iPod touch is exactly the same. The new nano is a bit different though -- seems to be the same externally, but internally they've added some improved sensors and things for exercise tracking and such.

There is definitely a fine line. The newer versions are considered generations in Apple lingo because, historically, a single change denotes a new generation. I mean, if design changes are what warrants a totally separate version, the the iPhone 4S isn't really a new generation of iPhone (even though it is classified as such).

Right but literally nothing changed about the nano and the touch only got a white option. When the iPhone got a white option several months later, it didn't count as a separate generation.

Yeah, we're corroborating model numbers and such. We might end up unpublishing the new iPod touch page.

You're correct, there's really nothing new except for the watch thing, but it's not enough. Why can't Apple actually put some effort into the Nano? I could see the watch thing really catching on if they would allow it to connect to the iPhone through bluetooth. To be able to see text messages or alerts on your watch would fit a niche market in my opinion. Actually just putting bluetooth in it so people could pair it with a workout bluetooth headset would be big. How hard would it be to put bluetooth in it?

Until the iPod Touch gets the A5 chip you're 100% correct, it's not different at all. Maybe their encouraging people in the iPod Touch market to go for the iPad, which is not a bad strategy to me. I expect the iPad to eat at iPod Touch sales the cheaper and more universal that iPhone gets. When you say kids love the iPod Touch I think that the parents would just toss their old iPhone at their kids after they upgrade or just go for the iPad in a splurge, thinking that the iPad is going to be more educational. I think techies can overstate the importance of the iPod Touch...iPhone and iPad are the fastest growing products in (Apple's) history.
