Can't update to iOS 5 from iOS 4.2.1!?

My iPhone 3gs can't update past 4.2.1, the popup keep informing me that I have the latest version.
I've fully updated my iTunes to 10.5 but it still won't update.

What do I do?

I don't have AppleCare, so the "helpful" advice from help desk of calling them, won't work.

Please anyone, I'm missing out on so many things!

It happens the same for me.

You may have the iPhone 3G (not 3GS). Check the model number of your phone and do a search on it on Google to find out it it's 3G or 3GS.

I found out mine was a 3G, though when I got it it was advertised as 3GS...

It was a 3g, so now I'm pissed at my phone company.
