So I'm on the tipping point of ordering this via priceusa.com.au, a site that imports from US to AUS, but I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts on this or if anyone has heard whispers about an international release?
Considering how long it's taken Amazon to come out with an International Kindle, is it even worth the wait?
From what I can tell, you can put books on it manually, so it's not like the current version won't work outside of US, so what downsides are there (apart from the obvious warranty issues)?
Discussion about
Buy internationally or wait for international release?
I going to hold off on the whole eBook front. They are coming out thick and fast and so the nook will look old pretty quickly.
Don't get me wrong, I desperately want one but I am just going to save my cash for a little bit longer and wait till the nook killer comes along...
Geez that name is just so awful.

Form the forums i've read, you can't even buy books from B&N online unless you have a U.S. IP Address too :( now i need to work out a deal with my cousin in L.A. to have him do any/all online purchases from B&N, that way I can access purchased content and download it from anywhere.
i'm wondering though, if they ever come out with an international version, could it be as easy to upgrade firmware to have this thing work outside the U.S. then?

That's what I'm hoping too... Given the possibilities that Android brings, I'd hope that a simple firmware upgrade would be necessary when they unveil an international edition...
I'm having a hard time deciding, because I really want to have a reader, but since the nook came out, the Kindle doesn't do it for me anymore... Aesthetically, the nook wins hands on, but the Kindle does offer 3g coverage in my country. I figured wifi would make it up for it, but since the only thing it can do with it is access the virtual library that I won't be using and it offers not even basic browsing to blogs then I have no use for it. So I would be buying a reader for the way it looks not for the functionality...

Here in Canada, the International Kindle did not happen due to no agreement with local cell phone carriers. I am therefore wondering about going for the Nook, and resisting saying I'm looking for a little nookie! So, for me, as with Australia, the big question I need to know is if it really is fully functional on WiFi alone. It looks like all support threads seem to say yes although earlier reports were that WiFi only worked at B&N stores.
Actually, looking at the details on the B&N site, the Nook CANNOT be used to buy new content over WiFi...only to re-download already purchased content. This means I need to avoid the Nook as well. Hoping one day we will have an eReader for Canada aside from the SONY.
"Can I use my nook while traveling abroad?
X Yes, when you travel abroad, you can read any files that are already on your nook. You can connect to Wi-Fi hotspots that do not use proxy security settings, such those commonly used in hotels, and download eBooks and subscriptions already in your online digital Library. You cannot, however, purchase additional eBooks and subscriptions."

I did ask myself exactly the same question. This are the findings I came up with based on information ontheir website:
GSM network won't work outside the USA, i.e. you will need a WiFi to browse the shop.
newspaper downloads and book buying will work if connected to a WiFi network
books can be transferred from you Computer using the USB connection (so you can also buy at other shops if they sell in a compatible format like the ePub)
You need an american credit card and adress in order to shop in the B&N store (at least here in Switzerland).
Hope this helped you, I think I am gonna ditch my Sony reader ;)
