Back to my Mac with Airport Extreme
Has anyone had any luck with getting the Back to my Mac with an Airport Extreme with an external hd hooked up to it. My MBP sees it when I am on a different network, but it gives me an error when I try to access it. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck, I know that Back to My Mac is usually unstable.
If you have it set up correctly your problem is probably your ISP or the internet connection. I had a TON of issues with this, and in the end I found out that I had it set up properly and the problem was with some ISP's or networks.
For example, I cannot connect when using an AT&T wireless card (perhaps they block the port). I also cannot connect from many public Wi-Fi connections as they don't have NAT port forwarding enabled (this seems to be required). You sometimes may see this error in your 'Back to My Mac' status - The light will be yellow.
The only time I've gotten this to work is when I am on a private network at somebody's house.
So, this functionality seems to be very limited. And, when it does work, it has been horribly slow in my experience.

I've never had a problem with it - when I first got the AE, I had it hooked up in a college dorm, pulling in the internet over a 30-50Mb/s connection. I signed into MobileMe in the Airport Utility, plugged in my drive, and was able to access it not only all over campus, but even when I went to London over spring break.
I've used it all summer at my house, and I've had similar results over a Comcast line. I went to Florida last week, and while I was gone, my computer was being serviced at the Apple Store. I put an old drive into my MacBook, put my normal boot disk into an external enclosure, plugged it into the AE via USB, and instantly it was ready to go. I had full access in Florida, and even was able to stream music from the disk.
All that to say that I've simply had no trouble at all with that feature. Hope you can get your issue resolved!
