I think the official name is the Dell Time Machine.

This would be like buying a PC nowadays with a very well skinned Windows 98.

Wow. That is just sad news for the tech world.

like Motorola did with Motoblur: they spent all their time customizing android 1.5 into their own interface. and they both fail to update it at release.
personally I agree with @brandonpapworth. I'd never buy another android below 1.6 (which I consider windows xp) but for a new phone to come out today below 2.0 is pathetic.

let's see if motorola or dell decide to update their software

If I can help it I will never buy an Android phone with anything but stock Android. Unless I can completely turn off the custom UI without any trickery or task killers, just through a setting in the Android menu.

Let's all cross our fingers that Gingerbread will come with either a kill switch or completely new standard interface with less skinning options like WP7

I agree completely. That's the main reason I haven't given an android phone a shot. I don't know how you can be a tech fan and invest in a phone that may miss the boat entirely on future updates that make things better.

I guess it's a little late now, but that's why I got the Nexus One while it was still available. Stock Android, it's fast, and since it is "the Google Phone," I know that I'm safe for future updates. It was definitely worth the purchase. Plus, since I didn't extend my contract, I can now get new phones at the discounted price.

What I really want is a nice android tablet with stock on it. I like the idea of the streak, just not the crap skin Dell put on the thing.

actually I think somebody told me that one of the newer htc sense phones had the option to turn off the ui. not completely sure about that, but htc's ui has proven itself good (doesn't cause problems) and they've been good and handing out updates (although their updates are usually on their site and not OTA)

It sounds like they're pushing these modifications as necessary for the business-minded individual. Really? If somebody is truly business-minded, then they're probably looking at a blackberry. Not an outdated Android 1.5 device. It just doesn't make sense.

Especially with the lack on enterprise support in 1.5. Those business features have improved a lot since then. 4 versions later, the OS is considerably more mature.

For Dell to come out with one Android 1.6 device and one Android 1.5 as its debut sets is just ridiculous in late 2010. And the skin won't help to much with that upgrade path either
