Attractive Woman with Baggage

That's the best analogy I can give you when talking about this Marilyn Monroe of a hard drive. Attractive package at first. But not when it begins to throw faulty power supply fits after half a year of ownership (indicated by an ominous 'tick' and power light flash). It seems to be a common problem amongst those who've bought into the product.. so beware!

Do you have a similar experience? Post up!

Mine completely died after about a year. I heard the problem is that they didn't design it with proper ventilation, causing it to overheat.

Wow. Were you able to find another enclosure for the drive? How was the LaCie customer support experience? That's a lot of data to lose!

I meant to, but never got around to it. I didn't lose anything, had a backup!

Wow, thats not good. I was looking at getting the 1TB Lacie Black drive.
That doesn't sound good for them

I just realized mine's been plugged in but not attached to the computer for the last year or two. Oooops! I think it was still working, but not needed after a system upgrade.

Agree power supply was a problem. I had to buy a replacement when my first one died. I think the pins bent or broke.

Still looks good on the desk, though.

I work for a software company and we buy many external drives. Many of the developers go through them like crazy. For a while, the company was buying a mixture of Seagate, WD and Lacie drives. We are constantly trying to get data off of failed Lacie drives. Many times for us, we see the controller card die and/or the hard drive. We also get the big disk series which are the multi disks in a RAID. We have more problems with those too. We have just stopped buying Lacie at work.

FIngers crossed. I have two that're are still working from 2004! One did crash on me six months after I bought it due to a permissions problem with iTunes and I lost GB's worth of music. Since then though, (Thank the Maker) I rely on them and they still work well.

How do you remove the drives though? I've been trying to find out for years w/o destroying my own

The best way to remove the drives is to find any sort of flat object (I used a knife), and to pry open the casing from the bottom. It's held in by some metal clips that 'click' into place. After that, it's just a quick disconnect.

Had mine for more than a year and haven't had a single problem with it. I guess I'm the exception in this case.

I have 3 Lacie externals of this model over the years, and all of them are working... and i keep them on 24/7 too.

I own three of these, and after two years only one of them still functions. They are terrible enclosures which cause i/o failure due to improper ventilation and consequent overheating. I pulled one apart after it stopped responding completely, and the hard disk works fine now that it is installed into a pc enclosure. The other one functions for 15 minutes or so before it overheats and gets i/o errors. They are designed to be stacked, but this only aggravates the overheating issue.

Through years of dealing with them, here is some advice. If yours stops responding and you think you lost the data:
1. don't panic
2. unplug and let it sit for 15 minutes and cool down
3. either plug it back in and get all the data you can off of it, or take the enclosure apart, remove the hard disk and put it in another computer

This has to be one of the worst errors by Porsche design. It has rendered the product almost unusable.

Mine lasted about 5 years... the enclosure at least. Bought a new enclosure, popped in the actual harddrive... now up and running again.
