AT&T Free Month for the Vita is a Scam
I got my 3G Vita today and I wanted to activate the free month of 3G. Well, in order to do that I need to open a new AT&T DataConnect account. For that to happen, I have to pick a specific plan to start off with, aka I need to pay for a month.
So, in order to get your free month of 3G from AT&T you have to pay for a month first. Also, in order to get your "free" game you have to wait until after the free month of 3G ends.
I hate you AT&T.

I'm pissed about this too. Especially with all the sales with the Wifi model now that include the 4GB card for free. I bought my Vita thru Amazon so it would be a pain to return and I'd have to eat the shipping costs, but if I had bought it at Bestbuy or Gamestop I would definitely return it for the wifi model at this point.
The 3G model is worthless until ATT startS a program that lets you share your data across multiple devices. There are rumors of this, but who knows how long til it's a reality. I've heard you can use the same sim card that comes with a 3G enabled iPad for the 3G and share the same plan, but I don't have an iPad. If I could I would pull the sim card out of my iPhone and stick it into the Vita, but there's no real reason to do that now.
The "Free" game, is only a $10 game and it's not like you get to choose....which sucks. I've heard Super Stardust Delta is a sick game, but it looks like I won't be playing it for a month....
I am happy to have the 8gb card, but after downloading all the demos, and 2 digital PSP games, my card is full! I wish I could bring the 3G model back, get a 4GB card for free and have my $50 go towards a 32GB card...or just use the $50 to get a game.
WHY SONY? WHY!?

I just figured out the same thing when I got home and read the fine print. :(
From what I read, though, I thought you got the free game 30 days after you activate the 3G. So you'd get the game after the month you paid for, and would have another month with the "free" 3G coupon.
I guess I sort of expected that there was a catch, so I wasn't too disappointed. I thought I'd get the free game right away, though. I wanted to play Super Stardust Delta tonight. I'm sort of bummed that I have to wait a month.

I just got the download code in my e-mail today. I activated my 3G account on the 26th of February, so I think it was only about two and a half weeks. I'll play the game tonight, but I'm sure some people already have the game and have posted about it.
I myself was not surprised at all and not bothered by it. I figured that hey, if I just get the best one that is going to be available and it came with an 8 GB card rather than the 4 and it also had the free game and an extra month of service available; it's worth it. I did my homework before I dropped that much money on something that I didn't know much about. Might want to think about that kind of stuff because sometimes when you leave yourself open for a bad surprise, you end up looking and feeling like a jackass.
Not the best promotion but I wouldn't call it a scam. The details of the free month have been floating around the interwebs for the past month. You, as a moderator, should not have been surprised.
Hmm interesting, I looked at the The Verge (www.theverge.com/2012/1/27/2752923/playstation-3g-...) and Engadget (www.engadget.com/2012/01/27/sony-reveals-new-3g-wi...) and nowhere does it say in there that the free data is after the fact that you pay for a month for new users. In fact, it wasn't until today at Joystiq (www.joystiq.com/2012/02/24/activating-playstation-...) that a blog I follow posted the devious details regarding this deal. If you read the comments on that post, I'm not the only that was shocked by this "deal."
You're right - I am a mod, but that doesn't always mean I'm up to snuff on small (seemingly unpublished) details like this, and it certainly doesn't excuse Sony and AT&T from not making this more clear upfront.

I am not trying to defend either Sony or AT&T. The promotion is less than stellar and should have been better described. Having said that, in my limited surfing, there were numerous threads discussing the details of this program since it was announced. As an example, if you go to Amazon's product forum for the Vita, there were a number of discussions regarding the "catch" to the promotion.

That information was one of the reasons I opted to not change my decision on getting a wi-fi only version. I mistakenly assumed a Gdgt product moderator would have been aware of the details.

Not that it matters much, but I found on the Vita FAQ that it comes with the DLC. It's in comment 196 here: blog.us.playstation.com/2012/02/16/ps-vita-the-ult...
So, since Super Stardust Delta plus the DLC pack is $15, it ends up being more or less a wash with the 3G activation fee, if you were going to buy the game anyway.
I didn't know about the sales with the free 4GB card. I guess the $50 premium ends up giving you:

- The difference between the 4GB and the 8GB card
- A buy one, get one free coupon of 3G service
- GPS in the Vita
