As Verizon announces the Iphone 4 in their impressive family of smartphones, I piggyback and push the envelope on gizmodo's article stating that you should…

not buy the Verizon Iphone.

4 iterations into the product lifecycle, it is much more predictable that there will be an Iphone 5 or '4G' this summer, so buying this one will only invalidate you from getting the new one.

On the subject of the new Iphone, I really hope they plan to make peripherals similar to the Motorola Atrix. Years ago I thought this was achievable, and with the already minimalist aspect and versatility of the Iphone it only makes sense. By minimalist, I mean that you don't have to carry a Ipod, GPS, phone, voicerecorder, subway map, point and shoot camera, video camera, notepad, etc. anymore. It only makes sense that the Iphone would begin to cannibalize laptop/netbook sales.

I push the envelope by saying that you should not buy an Ipad, especially if you have an Iphone/Ipod Touch. Maybe I am biased because I am very bearish on the Ipad in that (IMO) it's a very expensive piece of hardware that must be managed similar to an Ipod Touch and will be worth very little as the second and third iterations come out within a few years. I do think it paves the way for a company like Dell or HP to make cheap tablets to be used in education, but education has not been versatile over time and large scale expensive technology is simply a waste in the field where teachers need time to design lesson plans and ways to monitor activity. Also throw in that many people still do not have wireless internet/computers/etc at their house. These people needing to be included completely trashes the conversation of spending where effective in education.

Enterprise can be aided with Tablets, but where portability is helpful, power is not up to snuff. As far as I can tell, the biggest beneficiaries of tablets are media reporters/columnists, artists and people who are constantly traveling. As a recent graduate, I really don't believe college students benefit from a tablet over a laptop. I am sure I forgot a few categories of people but for the most part, the people I just listed do not have money to throw around on $500 toys that only hold their value for a year or two. (Maybe it's best market is medical?)

Once Apple cuts the price on the Ipad to $200 I'm in, but I will likely only use it at home. Until then, I will prep my living room for a laptop shell to come home, dock my phone and surf the web. Anyone else think Apple will move in that direction? I have been looking forward to it for a long time.
