Are you ready for the next generation of HDTV?

This week, I got to check out Westinghouse's D55QX1, a 4K (that's 4x 1080p) LCD TV the company is showing off and hopes to release early next year. The set is basically a consumer version of the D56QX1, a $50,000, 56-inch version the company released a few years ago, and which has found a home in industrial applications like high-resolution data-visualization of seismic activity deep below oil fields.

Since there's not a whole lot of 4K footage out there, Westinghouse was showing stills on the set, and they looked great. And the company says it's not waiting for 4K programming before releasing the set, insisting that people will find other uses for it, like, say, watching four 1080p streams simultaneously, However, given the relatively slow uptake of 3D, and the fact that plenty of people are still perfectly content with the 720p sets they bought a couple of years ago, I don't see a huge rush to 4K until there's some compelling content behind it.

Meanwhile, Vizio rolled out an HDTV that may have more immediate applications: The Cinemawide XVT3D580CM, a 58-inch LCD TV with a 21:9 aspect ratio designed to display widescreen HD movies on the whole screen. Of course, you may end up with black bars on the sides when displaying non-widescreen programming, which probably includes just about everything on broadcast and cable TV, not to mention your games. But your Blu-ray discs will look perfect.

At present, the easiest place to find 4K video is on YouTube. As 4K video cameras become more available and less expensive, it will become more common. With high resolution Retina-type displays appearing on Macs/PCs, this will increase the potential for viewing 4K content. 4K Blu-ray is allegedly coming in 2013, but you'll need a new player to handle it.
