Are you pumped up for Nokia's new ringtone?

Oh, my.

Nokia just released their new "dubstep" ringtone that was chosen by their fans on Facebook. It's ~20 seconds of some pretty hair raising sounds. Then again, maybe I'm just getting old.

That is the worst thing I could have imagined. When it started playing I thought it was a joke, but sadly it isn't.

Nokia realizes that this is going to play out of tinny phone speakers, right?

Oh well, at least nobody in the US will own one, so I'll never hear it. Phew! Dodged a bullet there!

Yeah! No kidding. Between this and the Netflix / Qwikster news, I thought today was April 1st!

There was a cheesy cuteness about that tone. Which is part of the reason why it caught on.

You have to listen to this new one on a small handset (the first thing I did before listening to it on the PC was to transfer it to my Nokia) to appreciate just how unbelievably teeth-shattering the stuttered vocal lead-in is for starters, and how each bass hit, when robbed of the low notes on a tinny handset, sounds just like short excerpts of a severe case of diarrhoea.

It's almost as though the morons at marketing didn't listen to this on anything else but crowding around a Macbook Pro.

And that's before we get to the merits of this as a dubstep snippet. I generally *like* dubstep where it's not too formulaic, and it's... well, shite as they say in Scotland. As AndrewL says, it's the sound of the next 60 seconds. Formulaic crap by a talentless button-pusher.

Did anyone else here watch Alias? I watched all of it as it aired, so I distinctly remember that the first episode was presented commercial-free, sponsored by Nokia. So it was no surprise that in the episode itself, Sydney Bristow uses the Nokia ringtone to distract some bad guys in a parking garage.

Considering I still remember that ten years later, I guess it was well worth the money Nokia spent.

I could write my own reply, but I think this sums it up:

They should change their tagline to "Nokia: Annoying People".

I don't mind the style of it as a standalone track.. but it doesn't sound like a ringtone at all. Somebody at nokia mentioned it being "very much the sound of now" which is exactly the problem. it's great that they're modernizing some, but it's going to sound totally dated in 5 years, instead of being timeless.

I think it's crap and I'm 22 (I'm assuming I fit into one of the ages in their target audience).

No, just, no. I would probably answer my phone really quickly or change the default ringer the first time I heard it.

Now I finally understand why Nokia is going downhill. They can't even get a ringtone done right!
