Love the product, but for me the hum of the fans are quite a distraction next to a silent iMac.
Thanks for your input.
Discussion about
Are the fans set to always be running? Very rarely do mine get a break and I am wondering if this is normal.
The fans in mine very rarely spin down. I've tried to figure out if the machine that it's plugged into is doing something to wake it, and I can't seem to find anything.
I think that with 4 (or more) drives in a small box, even at idle they are warm enough that the fan probably should be on all the time.
Very occasionally it goes quiet for a while, but it never lasts for more than 30 minutes.

Mine has had 4 drives for almost a year now and the fans spin-up every now and then depending on internal temperature. I would try and get a thermometer reading from inside the box.
It may also come down to the specific model/brand of drive as some run hotter than others. I initially had 4 x Samsung 1TB which run relatively cool and quiet, and now have 4 x WD Green 2TB, which are not as quiet but seem to be just as cool.

Like other people have mentioned, the fans could possible be linked to the HDDs installed. Drives like the Western Digital Green spin at a slower speed, so you can assume they'd generate less heat. Is the Drobo getting any air flow to the rear of the system?
I have 4 x 2TB Seagate Momentus drives in my Drobo, every so often the fans kick in for a couple of minutes then spin back down to an un-noticeable level.
If possible, try taking it back to the place where you bought it, they may be able to test it and potential replace/fix your unit if it does turn out to be faulty.

Late correction: I have 4 x 2TB Seagate Barracuda LP's in my Drobo. The Seagate Momentus in my MacBook Pro. Apologies for the confusion!
