Discussion about
Apple seems to have no fear of any upcoming tablets based on Tim Cook's comments yesterday.
I can't say I disagree with his comments in regards to Windows but I'm on the fence with the Android comments. On one hand he is correct, the next generation of Android tablets are technically non-existent until there is a price and date but to completely dismiss them is another. Although this was an earnings meeting so you want to say things to get people happy.
I agree. You always try to put your best foot forward during these sorts of things and project a lot of optimism. They were dismissing Android and Android tablets in the previous earnings call too.
I also think it's a combination of confidence and cockiness. They know they have a popular product, they're in a very strong position, and have a lot of consumer mindshare.

I think something else that definitely lends itself to his vapor comment is that in any video I saw of someone using the Xoom tablet there was nothing to use. There were 2 or 3 widgets and a gallery app. You didn't see anyone really using it like it was a proper product demonstration to the effect of the video they showed during their event.
I think the Xoom defiantly looks interesting. And Honeycomb looks good. I am curious has any one heard what the battery life is going to be on the Xoom?
I agree apps are important but so is the library of stuff that I have (apps, music, video and so on) I have been using the iTunes since before they went without DRM I have not bothered going back and removing the DRM from them or buying their upgrades from iTunes and I have a decent amount of music.
The Xoom does look like a cool device and I would love to play with it but the before I buy one I need to see what apple gives us in the iPad 2.
Also will the fact that Google went with a tablet specific OS force apple to so it can complete with the a better OS that is tablet dedicated? Personally I don’t think it will force apple to change any thing.

When the android tablets do launch, they won't be competing with the 1st gen iPad either, combination of product evolution and its high mindshare doesn't leave much to worry about in the foreseeable future (next quarter or two)
RIMM, Motorola and HP dismissed the iPad as a competitor to their new tablets (did you see the Xoom teaser for example?)
This is just PR. Take it with a grain of salt and let's see how Android tablets actually compete against the iPad.
But I think Tim Cook at least has some solid arguments (iPad sales, mindshare, ecosystem, AppStore) which is not the case for the competitors I would say.

I agree this is marketing and every one presents the product they are selling as the best and disregard all the other as not being competition.
Does anyone know when this new tablet version of Android is going to launch? It seems most of the images I saw from CES were video playback or very limited applications?
Apple also has the strength of its existing ecosystem of content and applications to draw upon that others seem to now just be getting started or even making real contenders to iTunes.
