Holy crap! Those are some impressive numbers, especially for a company dealing with the brief effects of "Antenna-gate" and Consumer Reports not recommending their device. The mindshare this company continues to maintain with the general public is pretty astounding.
One other statistic that keeps getting thrown around is how many iPads they've sold, and if "one were to count them as PC's, Apple would be the #1 PC maker."
I love my iPad, but this seems like a pretty disingenuous thing to claim. The fact that it can't be used as a standalone computer (needs an actual computer to be activated in the first place) is the biggest factor in my mind.
Anyway, it looks like despite these impressive numbers, analysts still expected more from Apple. Their stock is getting hammered after hours and they're currently down 6%. What?

Discussion about
Apple quarterly results -- sells 14.1 millions phones and 4 million iPads in 3 months.
Engadget is live blogging the earnings call. Sounds like Steve is ruling out a 7 inch tablet:
"Let's talk about the avalanche of tablets. First, there are only a few credible competitors. And they all have seven-inch screen. This size isn't sufficient to create great tablet apps. And this size is useless unless you include sandpaper so users can sand their fingers down to a quarter of their size. We've done extensive testing and 10 inches is the minimum tablet size."
Damn!

I'm a huge apple fan but Jobs argument against a 7 inch tablet are kinda moronic especially when the iPhone is 3.5 display. Arguing that it's too small is silly when the iPhone has been a huge success.
7 inch iPad would be a hit especially with the people who like ebook readers. Thanks apple but I will be trying out the Tab and Playbook!

I'm inclined to agree with you that 7 inches would seem to be an ideal size, but Jobs did address the disparity between a 3.5" screen on a smart phone and a 10" screen on a tablet.
It boils down to the fact that a smart phone is not a tablet -- that is to say, the interactions, applications, and tasks you're doing on a smart phone are completely different than what you're doing on a tablet. The increased screen real estate makes a tablet more than just an "oversized iPod touch."
Anyway, Steve seems to think a 7" screen is too small for a tablet device -- but like the iPhone and 10" iPad, I'm sure developers (and users) would find a way to efficiently take advantage of the screen real estate and comfortably use it. It wouldn't be the first time Steve spoke ill of a technology or hardware type, only to end up using it.
