Apple is launching iAds today -- is this a good reason to jailbreak your phone?

From what I understand, iOS has a hosts file, so one could theoretically use it to block certain domains. Unfortunately, the only way to access this is with a jailbroken phone. But if iAds become a nuisance, this might start looking like an attractive route to take!

I don't own an iPhone, but if I did, I wouldn't. Engadget just posted up Nissan's iAd ( www.engadget.com/2010/07/01/apple-turns-... ) and it actually looks pretty cool. This would be something I would be more inclined to look at since the whole experience is thought out and it's not just some banner link.

iAds are designed to be less of a nuisance. (Most) Developers will always put ads in their free apps. iAds are just a non-intrusive approach to mobile ads. From what I've seen they wont even overtake your screen unless you tap on them. If I have to look at ads, I'd rather see an iAd then something else.

True.

I think what bothers me about this now though is that these rich and well done ads can severely affect my monthly bandwidth quota.

Not if you don't click on them though, right?

Yea. I can see this being an issue for some people. Especially on iPad.
But I don't have a limit, and there are plenty of reasons to not have a limit.

Rubbish. The crap ads that exist in apps today are the nuisance. iAds aren't annoying and you still don't have to click on them. The only difference is that if you DO click on them, you aren't as pissed off at them as you are for existing ads.

I thought they were letting people opt out of it at https://oo.apple.com/ or was that only for the location stuff?

Yeah, that was only for targeted advertising based on location.
