Anyone disappointed that the iPhone 4S isn't being offered on T-Mobile?

Looks like T-Mobile got left out on the iPhone party. I have a feeling there are a lot of people out there are disappointed by this.

Also, any thoughts on why Apple didn't have T-Mobile as a partner?

AT&T is trying to buy T-Mobile, if that goes through there wouldn't be a need for a T-Mobile iPhone...since it would just be an AT&T iPhone anyway.

I'm kind of inclined to agree with this, like Apple sees the writing on the wall, why bother making a deal with a dead man?

Of course, if all those lawsuits and injunctions against the T-Mobile/AT&T merger pan out, then they're going to have to revisit this. It simply cannot do for T-Mobile to be the only major carrier to not have the single most popular phone.

...and I just realized that this is probably the real reason that T-Mobile isn't getting the iPhone 4S:

www.consumerist.com/2011/10/t-mobile-cant-cut-pric...

Because by adding the iPhone to their lineup, then it looks like they're actually trying to complete with AT&T!

(Basically, the DoJ is saying that T-Mobile needs to be a separate company so the market stays competitive, which is better for consumers. AT&T's contention is that they're not actually competing with T-Mobile, so it's not going to make a difference in the market if they merge with T-Mobile.)

They probably don't want to support T-Mo's network, which is incompatible with every other GSM/HSPA network. It's too bad, they would get a lot of customers from people who refuse to use an ATT phone. They're probably just waiting for the acquisition to go through.

I have several other phones, I own Apple stock, and I would buy a T-Mo iphone in a second. Not that it matters.

Since it's GSM, people with T Mobile would likely buy the iPhone outright ($750) and just put their sim card in the slot. I know people who have done this with the 3GS and 4 and many have gotten discounts on their monthly payment because T Mobile didn't have to subsidize their phone payment. If you run the numbers you can break even after a little over a year so if T Mobile survives the merger I see many people who love iPhone and T Mobile to do exactly this.

Obviously having a termination fee doesn't help the calculation so I wouldn't suggest anyone try this if your already under contract.

I am incredibly disappointed.

I was hoping that this phone would support the AWS band of UMTS. I simply wanted to buy the iPhone outright and unlocked to use on T-Mobile. I have a $60 plan with no contract that I am very happy with, and I go overseas often, so I prefer to not have a contract and I need an unlocked phone.

Now that this is the case, I will look into whether getting the iPhone 4S to use on Sprint makes sense. Otherwise, I will just hold onto the Nexus One or look for another Android phone.
