Any questions about the new Nokia phones?

Going to meet up with Nokia later this morning, if you have any questions about the Lumia 800 or 710 I'll do my best to answer them.

Please make your questions about the phones themselves.

Is WiFi Hotspot installed on the devices, like the new mango phones should?

I asked about this and it sounds like it's still to be determined. Mango supports this, but ultimately the carriers have to acquiesce.

They could have answered this easily for countries like India where we are not locked in to carriers. This is a must for me while looking at new phones. I was thinking of getting the focus, but the lack of wifi tether and the absence of a front camera made me go in for another android device.

Any DLNA apps from Nokia?

It would be interesting if you can get a straight answer on why the front-facing camera was omitted, especially considering that the N9 had one.

They were not able to give me an answer, the Nokia reps there simply did not know why that decision had been made.

  1. Why should I buy a WP7 device from Nokia, and not from the competition, like HTC or Samsung? How do they differentiate their devices from the competition? What makes Nokia's devices special compared to the rest?
  2. Nokia 800 has 16-bit AMOLED display. Nokia 710 has 24-bit TFT display. How is numbering scheme supposed to work again?
  3. Why are the devices coming to Canada not this year, but next?
  4. Why don't either of the two devices announced have pentaband HSPA+ radio? Even mid-range Symbian devices now sport a pentaband HSPA+ radio for near planet-wide compatibility with HSPA+ networks.

  • The build quality on the 800 is very good. It also comes with some mapping and navigation stuff that is exclusive to Nokia phones.
  • The 710 is definitely a lower-quality device.
  • They could not say.
  • I asked, they could not say. Could have something to do with focusing on carrier partnerships, but I don't honestly know.

Thanks!

Looks like they really don't have real answers to a lot of the questions raised by the GDGT community here. Seems like they were reading off of a script.

My primary phone is a Windows Phone 7 (Samsung Focus). After owning an iPhone 4 and several Android devices, only WP7 works the best *for me*. If Nokia would have included a front facing camera and the ability to have at least 32 GB, I would be sold. Is there a reason why Nokia did not include a 32GB or 64GB model? 16GB is not enough. Why is the front camera missing? How often do users actually utilize the front camera? probably not often enough but it is something I will be using constantly in the new Samsung Focus S. WP7 has enough apps in the marketplace nowadays, that does not come into place when deciding what to purchase. I have not been missing any apps from my switch from the iPhone/Android OS's.

When will Verizon get one?

They told me that US carrier availability will be announced early 2012, but they couldn't confirm that Verizon would be among them.

Has Nokia announced any plans to sell these phones sim free directly like apple do?

The one and only question I have is whether they will make it tether without making users jump through hoops or try and decipher cryptic answers from them.

The specs look much better (NFC would be nice), I'm hoping that they stick with the same design as the 800 as it looks amazing :)

AFAIK, WP7 does not support NFC currently, which is why this device may have been delayed.

I gotta say, I saw the Windows Phones at the recent LA gdgt meetup. They are really slick. I love my Android devices though and don't see any temptation to switch. It's a shame MS is so late to the party. I feel like the same thing happened with the Zune, way to late to the party to matter in the long run, even though the device kicked ass and was way better than everything else out there at the time.

I have a general curiosity about your reaction to these devices (as you primarily carry an Android based device.) This probably isn't the question you intended after a quick look, but curious to know if you can ever see yourself holding this as your primary phone. Mango appears to have a solid group of default applications (which makes the argument that it doesn't have a large app library less important).

Just curious to hear your impressions at some point.

First impression: the 800 is really nice, screen is amazing.

I think Mango is pretty good, just wish I could use Gmail on it in the same way I use Gmail on Android.

I haven't read anything regarding release in the US, it will be very difficult to steal mindshare from iOS and Android if the flagship device is not available on US carriers (especially AT&T and Verizon). What are your thoughts on this?

peter

I believe their strategy is less focused on getting people to switch from iOS and Android and more focused on disgruntled BlackBerry owners and people who have never owned a smartphone before (which is still a very large number).

If they have any knowledge of the situation, when will Microsoft allow screens with a resolution higher than 800x480?

Have they said anything about being able to add mms apns manually, thats a real problem for using WP7 on MVNOs as the apps on lg and samsung dont have many of the mvno operator apns pre-installed.

- Why 16Gb like everyone else? Nokia is usually pretty good at stuffing memory into a flagship phone as in e.g. the N900 / N9.
- Can I use the standard round-plug Nokia chargers with some sort of adapter? (bummer it's not onboard)
- A really minor point, but what wired (ideally 3.5mm jacked) remotes will there be?
- That and daninbusiness's question regarding front facing camera, considering even my relatively pathetic C5-00 has one

  • They weren't sure.
  • They weren't sure, but thought there would be.
  • They really weren't sure about this one.

some of these have already been asked:

* why no front camera?
* hot spot support?
* will it have LTE support when it comes to the US?

I answered first two below.

Looks like only HSPA+ for now.

I used to love Nokia phones, but I went for the iPhone 4s. My only question is this to little to late for Nokia? These phones they announced seem to have less features then most Android phones and the iPhone. These even have less features then most upcoming WP7 phones. The turn by turn app is nice though.

Are there differences in the blue colors in the UI vs. the color of the blue Lumia 800 casing? I'm wondering if any clashes might be distracting.

peter

Funny, I was wondering the EXACT same thing when I was checking out the blue version of the 800. The blue in the UI and the blue of the casing are different, and while they don't exactly clash, it would have been great if they could have gotten them to match.

Thanks, that's too bad. I think the blue design is refreshing, but a difference like that would push me towards black.

I had a go on a device in the UK today and, whilst it was black, it seemed to come with its own 'Nokia Blue' theme, which ironically was darker the colour used for the actual devices. The native Windows Phone blue theme seems to be your best bet although it's still a bit darker from what I've seen.

Regardless, the guy in the shop said they're not expecting to see anything other than black devices until after Christmas, and all the online pre-order options seem to suggest that blue is a no-go for now too :( Bit of a bummer really as I was very keen on not getting a black one.

What do I buy ? Nokia 800, HTC Titan or the HTC Radar. OR do I wait and see what the second round of WP7 phones are like from the other manufactures ?

peter

Tough call, guess it depends on where you live, how long you might have to wait, what screen size you want, etc.

I live in the UK and I am not to sure what screen size I want I have never had anything over 3.7. Do you feel 4.7 is a bit to much in the hand ?

peter

If the phone is thin enough I think a larger screen size like that works. Been using the Galaxy S2 lately and it never feels too big to me.

Since the new Nokia phones are going to miss the important holiday season this year, do you think Nokia/Microsoft will be able to grow in userbase at all in the US as opposed to other regions?

If an American could procure a Lumia 800 from the UK launch, would it work on AT&T or T-mobile here in the states?
