Android 1.6 SDK now available, Donut on the way.

Well it is now official Donut is coming to devices as early as October. The code has been finished for awhile now, and now the App devs now have a chance to make their apps work under donut. I am already running donut and hoping with the SDK out i can stop seeing so many breakage issues.

Also on a different note, BFS is coming to Android in the official updates. I would imagine with 2.0 but the fact that is coming is going to mean Android will be at least twice as fast when BFS hits officially.

This was discovered by Cyanogen in the git hub code for Android.

Might I inquire as to what BFS is?

Thanks for that. Also a pretty funny name. Only open source can get away with that.

Yeah they get away with a lot, but that is an awesome name for an official update. Especially since they may have to explain what it is when they release it. But it has so far made my G1 blazing fast, faster then a 3GS dare i say.

I'm stoked for the new market. That looks like a huge improvement and I am glad that it is coming in Donut. I'm also hoping that I'll get some performance enhancements when it gets rolled out to users with existing hardware.

I am actually messing around with the new market right now, and it is freaking awesome.

when did Cyanogen implement BFS? Has it been there for a couple months or is it a new development?

I think just about two weeks its been in his code, or maybe 1 week, still it is freaking fast. When someone calls me there is no lag in getting the call even while running an app.

sounds really impressive and makes me even more excited about 1.6. This is going to be a pretty darn nice update.

I am not sure BFS will be in Donut, since it is really new and the Donut code was finished before BFS showed up, but the Eclair update is going to make a lot of people very happy and is going to make Android even more impressive.

now all i need are some icons that aren't really ugly. the hero's icons are really nice but i dont want to have to install open home and run that app just to get better icons. maybe im too picky but the camera and vid camera icons are just really bad and look like it took them 5 minutes to create them.

Well the easy way would be to root and install a theme. I like the icons on some of the themes, they are quite good. Other then that all you would need is better cut i believe, since that is what changes the icons, could be wrong.

The git main branch on Google, is it the same software that can be downloaded from HTC? It seems the system image does not work together with the latest radio image, or maybe I do something wrong. I have upgraded to 1.6 from HTC hompage, fetched the source from git, built it and flashed the system image. Then I loose connectivity, and find several issues, like a bad keyboard map and other things that would indicate it is a compatibility problem. Anybody knows how to get the code from the git repository to run properly? Oh yes, I use an ADP1.

Well the code on the main git branch is basically donut, the problem is it does not have any proprietary drivers from HTC so trying to throw it on the phone will work but you will not necessarily have the drivers you need. Are you just trying to get Donut on your ADP1 or trying to compile your own ROM?

I think I found it myself. The main branch is for Donut. I will download the Cupcake branch and try that instead.

Honestly i have only slightly researched pulling and compiling the code from Git hub on my own. I want to try and make a ROM myself maybe for others to use but i would like to program apps first, I am really just learning all of this now. And with everything i have going on its going to be a long process.

Yes, there is a lot of us learners around when it comes to this platform. I sure can understand that you want to do apps first. It seems to be a great platform for building apps, and many people do. And that is good. Still, being a tech freek, I want to poke around in the platform and the kernel. By the way, switching to Cupcake was of course correct, but I still got problems, and I have not found out what to do about the missing drivers you mentioned. I really must learn more about this. It is soo exciting. :-)

Yeah i have tried my hand in making apps, but my problem is what i want to make is way above what i know. I am aiming to make a home replacement app that interlaces with my ROM which would end up being a Google free ROM with Kernel tweaks and hacks, like Flac support and BFS. I follow a lot of the devs and the XDA is a good place to read up and learn tid bits about kernel tweaks and the like. Once Ubuntu 9.10 finalizes i will probably pull the code off Git Hub for donut and try and start tweaking it a little.

I'm building it all. That creates three images, system, userdata and ramdisk. I only use the system image. Updating the userdata did not make any differnce, even if someone sait it could do so in some situations.
