Airport Express as range extender (Linksys router)

I've got a home with one Macbook and several machines running Windows 7. I currently have A wireless-N router (the Linksys WRT160NL) and want a wireless way to extend the range.

I heard the Airport express can do this wirelessly (so no need to plug an Ethernet cable to it, and also convenient that it plugs straight into the wall), but heard that this only works well on a network that's connected via Airport Extreme (although some say will work on any network).

Here's the actual question, I guess: will the Airport Express work with the WRT160NL as a wireless range extender?

Don't quote me but I'm pretty certain it will only extend the network from Apple hardware meaning you have to also have an airport extreme or base station. I have set this up and it works fairly well but to get adequate speed you do need to place them close enough to each other to reach a good signal and pass it on. I have setup a customers house using nothing but a Time Capsule and Airport Express's. I did however need to add a power to ethernet converter to allow signal to get to one room of the house which was farthest (upstairs and far end of the house) away.

I would agree with ttringles idea of using a power to ethernet adapter instead. It works quite well and is very convenient. Using an Aiport Express to extend range however is beyond me.

I have used an express to extend a Wi-Fi network from a Linksys router, so you were right to have doubts about the Apple hardware only idea.
