40
I updated to the new 3.40 firmware last night and didn't see many changes. Two items I saw were an updated picture gallery that allowed for Picasa and Facebook uploads and a video editor program that allowed you to edit local videos and upload them to Facebook or Youtube.
The only other changes I read about are the ability to get PlayStation Plus and rate PlayStation Store purchases.
I may get PlayStation Plus once I see what kind of content they offer after a few months since I buy lots of $10 PSN games anyway.
The PSN content rating feature is a welcome change so that I can see which games people like and dislike easily.

also, I tested the picture upload on facebook and it was very easy and fast. You simply start the picture gallery, select the pic you want to send, hit the triangle (menu) button and select upload. It asks you Picasa or Facebook - select one and then its there.
On Facebook it has the subtitle about when and where you posted it in this format:
"X hours ago via PlayStation®Network"

i updated it last night too... nothing really sticks out to me. as far as the facebook picture thing. seems to me like i'd never use this, due to me having all my pictures on my pc. seems like this won't get too much use. i doubt people have that many pix on their ps3 they don't have on their pc.
the only reason I have pics on my PS3 so far is it is a great way to do slideshows... personally I have a ton of girly pics that surprisingly my friendgirls all like to look at... its the best way to display a lot of pics on your HDTV from the couch, and you can do slideshows with transitions, set it to your own music... you can plug your digital camera in via USB and do it that way too...
the interface speed and presentation make it the best way to view pics on your HDTV....
The addition of the facebook connectivity just makes uploading more of an appliance experience.. it removes the need for the PC if you happen to be at your TV and want to do these things - the same as with Netflix and Pandora/Last.fm... The PS3 is already on your TV... in other words, its just helping people be lazy!! :P

If you use your PS3's web browser to view streaming video from sites like live.twit.tv and justin.tv, DO NOT UPDATE to 3.40 firmware. This update kills the streaming video, and only the audio works.
Many have been complaining about this on the TWiT Network's IRC chat.
Hopefully there will be a fix soon.
