I had two, both of which suffered hardware problems that made the device unusable (hangs, overheating, malfunctioning headphone jack/internal speaker). By contrast, the Touch 4G has been a rock-solid performer.
I use it mostly for listening to audio (podcasts, audiobooks). I use the camera which works pretty well - not as good as the iPhone 4, but better in many ways than the 5MP camera on the original Motorola Droid: it's much faster, and there's less noise in the pictures. The screen quality is a big improvement over the 2G Touch - I had been using a screen protector, but have found them largely unnecessary thanks to the Gorilla Glass - and the retina display is outstanding. It plays video smoothly.
Battery life is impressive; I rarely need to charge it longer than it takes to sync my podcasts for the day, and it's gone for several days of near-continuous use for audio before needing a full charge. This lowers a bit when I'm using the screen or wifi heavily, but even then it always lasts through the day.

A vast quality improvement on the 2G Touch.
I completely agree with all of the points that you have made. I was also the owner of an iPod touch 2G and this is a tremendous upgrade that I am glad to have made. I will never get over the beauty of the Retina Display until it is bested by a newer technology. Apple is really great at marketing, but the iPod touch *is* truly "magical."
