This is exactly what I was thinking. There are cheap phones with full QWERTY's for texting, and plenty of devices out three that take the place of a phoneless smartphone. Get a Samsung Propel on the cheap, which has a good QWERTY, and an iPod Touch.

There really is no reason to have a smart phone if you aren't going to take advantage of the data plans available. Otherwise, if you're only using the "smart" features in WiFi, just buy a PMP or MID to use in said WiFi. It only makes sense. Smart Phones without data plans are just a waste.

yeah i agree, you need a cheap cell phone with no data plan, and an iPod Touch.

yes ipod the best solution,
for smartphone with no data plan.

Get a flat cheap cell phone no data plan , buy a used or refurb ipod (has wifi and about any app iphone has) get a gel back protector for the ipod and superglue it to the back of the cell phone, there you go one device without the data plan!

I think the best bet right now is Sprint since you can get 450 minutes and unlimited data and messaging for $70 a month, so while Tmo might still be a bit cheaper with sprint you can get unlimited mobile to mobile calling on any network. Plus now sprint will have the Android Hero and both Palm Pre's so its a good bet.

I'm not too sure what the data plans for Blackberry are like in America, but in Australia, I have unlimited data usage included in my cap with Optus. In my first bill i used over $400 worth of email alone, when you consider that my plan gives me $300 worth of calls, texts, mms, etc. that's awesome!! And i have free mobile facebook and browsing!

Is that similar to what happens in America?? I reckon that is definitely the way to go if it works the same way :)

ALL people that get the data plans are just idiot consumers that the big assholes prey on !!!!!
WE are just idiot consumer that they love... WE let them be Assholes.. If ALL of us would do what jlee444 said we WOULD have a smartphone WITHOUT the data plan..... I saved enough to buy two 64gb ipods one for me one for the wife and put gas in the tank... :) :)

iPods are a great alternative to smartphones with data plans. That's what I have now and I just talk on my older cell. I pay $15 less per month than my hubby with his iPhone.

THANK YOU for all these answers. Just got off the phone with ATT and was told all phones need a data plan to work except their Samsung Flight II. Was also told it wouldn't get online tho. I didn't think that made total sense cuz there is Wi-Fi then there is 3G and my hubby said he only has the data plan on his iPhone 4 becuz ATT had the phone cheaper than a cell phone store if he had the plan and a 2yr contract. He said he doesn't have to have a data plan after that. The ATT guy told me he would have to have it for his iPhone to function. I don't think he was right. I suppose I could upgrade my old Razor Flip phone for 1 cent and not get a data plan and see if it gets Wi-Fi. I have an iPod touch and an old flip phone and can do EVERYTHING my hubby's iPhone 4 can do except talk on the same device. I can text for free with the free apps: i2i and text free as well as any online activity I want within Wi-Fi without a data plan. We didn't buy a text plan either. He pays $15 per month more to get 3G on occassion (which now raised to $20 for new phones). I am glad to read that I can probably get online with Wi-Fi without a data plan.

I got a blackberry from a friend, and I've never had or signed up for a data plan before. But in my house, I'm able to get the wifi. Do you know if it charges you?

Truly... using an iPhone without a data plan is like using a PC without access to the internet. Most of what you can do with it is chopped off at the knees. You don't THINK you'd use the data that much, but trust me, you end up leaning on it for everything you do.

It's not that bad because there's always the option to use WiFi. The data plan is definitely really useful but not to the extreme you described.

I still never understand why people want smartphones without data plans. Isn't the whole point about having a smartphone is because they're built around the internet and they have access to email and such? Makes no sense!

Yes, but most of them use WiFi, and most coffee shops and many places of business that you would find someone in with a smartphone will have a WiFi network that is most likely open. So the data plan is redundant in many cases, and most people i know go strictly onto WiFi if they're able to so they can save on their data plans and still surf the web and check their email.

wow, this topic is still going? Its kind of pointless to have a smart phone without data. Half to 3/4 of what my iPhone does is data related. It certainly would cost a fortune if I didn't have an unlimited plan....

You and others like you are so presumptuous to make such general statements like "whats the point of having a smartphone without the data plan?" You add to our frustrations by siding with AT&T. The whole point of the topic is to say we don't want you or any corporation dictating how we need to spend our $30 dollars a month and I would hope there is some way around this issue, legal or otherwise. You are complete idiots to speak for me or anyone else! I have a Blackberry and love it more since I removed the data plan. Before smartphones there were PDA and mobile phones and we wished we could have both in one...remember? I use my Blackberry for keeping basic medical information, updates and changes in my health, I have account numbers, policy numbers, credit cards, utilities, payments processed and whole host of notes and appointments. The Blackberry took the place of a Franklin Quest system for organization...and I have NO NEED FOR THE DATA PLAN!!! Yay for WiFi!!!

Don't speak for my $30 dollars I save each month, asshole! Additionally, I'm not interested in having to learn some other device. I like my Blackberry and after 3 years feel like I'd like to replace it with a new version without that damn data plan forced down my throat.

Unlimited would be nice if it was still offered ... Wi-Fi is offered in most public places, so data isn't needed as much and at home there are wireless networks. Cell carriers have us where they want us and unless a massive boycott happens or one company is bold and offers a non data plan smartphone or free data not much you can do.
