A proprietary connection? Really? Oh come on.

We just had the cell phones sorted out over here in Europe and now we have to go through the same *** again with tablets? I nearly got interested in the tablet form factor but now, forget it... waiting some more. Slowly I loose my motivation of being an early adaptor.

I had thought the Galaxy Tab was going to use PDMI which looks like a nice solution, but apparently it doesn't.

PDMI looks really interesting, especially the potential interoperability with the Dell Streak. Standardization is a wonderful thing.

My understanding is that it _is_ a PDMI connection. It's just that nobody that's reviewed it has actually _seen_ one before, so it gets labeled "proprietary".

Ooooooooh! Me likey. So they finally wised up, 7 years later... :p

Shame there's no digital audio path tho.

If it is in fact PDMI then it may support digital audio as part of the DisplayPort interface integrated into that spec.

Hmmm. I suppose it's a possibility.

Proprietary port is more useful. A MicroUSB charges and data-transmits: No other function. More pins, more stuff it can do.

It would be nice if everyone else could agree an 'non-Apple' proprietary port. But it probably isn't going to happen.

Charging... and transferring data... erm, what else do you want it to do?

dock audio / video?

I don't know what the tab needs to do that a USB connection couldn't. I guess I don't know enough about it. But for me it is essential, that I can at least charge the device with a micro USB without needing to get a new charger every time I buy something new... At least put in the additional option of charging via microUSB

It outputs 1080p video. That's what a PDMI connector does: HDMI and USB 3.0 over a single connector.

What's funny about this whole thread is how it echoes what people said about the Kindle connector when it came out. Why do we need another connector? And now that's the connector type (microUSB) you're asking for. Thing is, the Galaxy Tab (like the iPad) needs 10 volts to charge. So if it's pin-compatible with other devices that can't handle 10V, it's a matter of time before you'd have fried some other microUSB device by plugging it into the Tab's charger. I would imagine you're going to see this connector become a standard, and if they're smart, all the accessories will be compatible with one another. Yes, it sucks that it can't all be USB ports all the time, but there are other factors in play here.

I don't know enough about electrics. But wouldn't it be possible to charge the Tabs battery on lower voltage? Wouldn't it just take longer?

However, as a customer, I don't like it and I basically don't buy gadgets which need charging and don't use a standard microUSB connector. I am aware that they do not produce this tablet for me and that I am free to not buy it ;) But I just do not understand, that I always have to have hundreds of different cables lying around. I live in this dreamy world where everything is easy and made for the customer, not the producer ;)

Well -PDMI is trying to be a more useful (for portable devices) equivalent of MicroUSB. I've never really seen the point of portable devices NOT having a proper dock connector and I hadn't been following development of PDMI (possibly because the blogs I check for new stuff are Apple-obsessed) so this is news to me and good news at that.

I would say that since the PDMI has not be the defacto connection for Android it is unexpected and disappointing on the Galaxy Tab. The PDMI has some advantages, but at this point it just feels like it's un-needed.
