$4999 for an idiot proof 16tb RAID for my video users as a local backup? sold.
Hi Dave,
We have two of them. The 2nd was up and running in a few hours, including me messing around with it. The first had a few bad hard drives... back and forth with Drobo Techsupport for a few days. They need to beef up their enterprise support, it doesn't cut it in its' current form. I can deal with it, as this is a fairly new product.
RMA'ed the (retail) drives and all is well.
I work for an advertising agency and these are being used as local hot backups and an intermediate archival system for our video production folks. Mac Pro towers (dual ethernet for iSCSI) and Final Cut.

The performance is somewhat lacking IMO. For me, it's practically single-machine use so it's not as big a deal - but for Mac shops, I can definitely appreciate the idiot-resistant setup, running, user aspects and upkeep over and above that issue. The other big draw for me was the acoustics in general operation.
It's definitely not something you buy because you're looking for the performance advantages of a heavy-duty iSCSI setup. It's a nice, hopped-up home system that works in a small workgroup with little fuss.
