I will be purchasing a iPhone 3GS handset very soon... just debating whether I will actually need the extra 16GB on the iphone.
How many of you bought the 32GB over the 16GB model? is there such things as too much memory?

The intended number of apps would be one variant in deciding which of the two memory configurations to choose from. The key variable however is probably size of music library and amount of photo/video intended to keep on phone. I went into the Apple store initially thinking I would buy the 16GB version but decided last minute that it was better to have more than less.
It hinges on if you will carry a lot of video or not. For me, it wasn't worth paying 50% more for the extra space. I have about 60gb of music but I carry about 11gb on te iPhone, plus 1.1 gb of Apps. I don't really keep video on it (except for what I shoot on the iPhone itself)
I got the 32GB as I intend to carry most of my music library and replace my 32GB iPod Touch (which is full).
i personally believe that owning the 16GB touch is far different from the iPhone. I would think the most logical thing to do would be to buy a 32GB depending on your personal storage needs. But I personally would rather be safe then sorry.
I agree. Because I had the 32GB, I was able to record for over an hour (a few days ago), without worry of filling up the device. If you're not using it for video, go for the 16GB. :)
I had an 8 GB first gen and I still had 3 GBs left. I now have the 16 GB 3GS and I know I won't use all the space I have a lot of apps and I have like 6 GBs of music and I'm set for awhile. But if you know your going to have a bunch of apps and a ton of music then get the 32 but I feel like 16 is plenty
I bought the 16. I was upgrading from the original iPhone with 8 so thy was still a step up. Remember apple will probably release the 3gs+ or 4g model in the next few years so you will get another chance to upgrade your memory then. I figur 16 will get me through two product cycles before it seems woefully small.
Right, video consumption is good when one has a high speed reliable connection. But for those who may have to work offline having a good amount of storage works well. Like in an airplane for watching movies.
I went for the 16g version for cost, but it hsnt been enough for me. I had an 80g classic before and was hoping to avoid carrying around two devices but it hasn't worked out. For day to day errands and traffic the 16 g is fine, but I use my iPod for 8 hours a day at work and need the variety. But if you don't mind syncing often and predicting your days listening, the the 16 or even 8 is fine. But I can't.
I guess it would depend on how much music or vids you want to carry. I have 40 gigs of music in iTunes on my computer. I would buy a 64 gig phone if they offered it. And to be honest the reason I didn't buy an iPhone prior to the 3G S was be because 16 gigs didn't seem like enough storage for me. I travel a lot and was looking to reduce the number of devices I carry. Now with the 3G S my 60 gig video iPod has a permanent home in its dock attached to my home theater system.
I definitely went with the 32GB phone. I wanted to be able to carry videos and not have to worry about making sure I had the right ones. I don't have to worry about memory because I only have bout 15 GB of music. I loaded all my music, all the videos I wanted, all the apps I wanted, and I still have 5 GB left.
It really all comes down to what you're going to put on your phone. I have a 33 gig library just music but i only put about 3 gigs mainly because those are my top rated songs. I own a lot of discography's so i dont need all the songs from every album on my phone. Plus i cant imagine syncing 33 gigs of music to my Phone that would take forever. Also you can try an app called SImplify music which lets you stream your music on your computer from your phone on edge,3g and wifi. it works pretty good actually and if i find myself wanting to listen to something not in my list i can just go to that app. it takes a few seconds to load but its not to bad. Maybe when Apple comes out with a 64 gig Phone i might consider that hopefully we will be able to shoot hd video with it and than the space will be necessary.
Definitively the 32GB, specially if you will be using it as your primary music/video portable player and/or consider using the video feature (1 minute of video = 25MB!!!)
Going with the 32 GB model was a good choice. It is NOT 50% more expensive, as provider subsidizing leads some to (falsely) believe. The cost of a new iPhone 3gs and the cost of a two year contract from AT&T runs approximately $2,500. You're looking at paying only 4% more on the total cost of ownership to DOUBLE the storage on the phone.
I picked up the 32GB for my wife and I (we had 32GB gen1 iPod Touches) All our music is encoded as Apple Lossless and we're planning on using it for video and pics of our newborn when she arrives... 32GB was essential.
32GB for me. I went from an 8GB iPhone 3G to the 32GB 3GS and I love it. I finally have all my music on my phone and don't need a dedicated playlist for it. Also remember you're going to be capturing video and wanting to take advantage of every GB of space your phone has. I would heavily recommend the 32GB.

32GB still won't hold my entire collection, but it is a step in the right direction. I don't really like to choose what to put on my device. I would rather just have everything available.
I don't own either of these devices, but I've run IT for small businesses where employees use them as phones or PDA's. In the end it really depends on what you plan on doing. If you're a power user (which I would suspect you are), paying extra for 32 gb is more than worth it. If not, I'd stick with the 16 gig version.
Personally, I have somewhere around 100gb's of music, and I find myself getting bored with the 6gbs of music I have on my 16gb 3g. Since I have so much music I have the tendency to just put 13gbs of music on it for the sake of variety and then leave 3gb for podcasts, audiobooks, apps, and pictures. If I had a 3gs I would prolly opt for the 32 since I would have a bigger variety of music with me so I would be as likely to get bored with my music selection, not to mention all the random videos I would shoot on the weekends, being a college kid :D
This is a no-brainer. 32GB. You WILL run out of room. Question is: When?
Well seeing as I have a Larger Library and like to take a lot of photos and video eats up more memory as well now that the iphone shoots video. I chose the 32gb the extra storages is great and really with the 16 gb u really only have 14 after the OS is taken into account if that makes a difference to you. Plus youre stuck with it for atleast 18 months so I think the 32gb is safer bc theres more storage for to fill over that time eriod.
For $100.00 more, the extra 16 GB. is worth it. Plus the higher resale value. I can't believe how much my one-yr. old 16 GB. 3G is going for these days. Especially after it's been jailbroken and unlocked. :)

What about a full fledged nav program like tomtom? If you plan on buying apps the 32 is really the best option, I have a modest amount of apps on my phone and there using 1.7 gigs. And if you plan on getting the 4g/3g-SS'OC'GT next year that 32 gig iphone will most likely fund your upgrade. I bought the first gen 8 gig and it have provided me with a 16 gig 3g and now a 32 gig 3gs at no cost to me.
The other thing to think about is if you get the 16GB and in 6 months figure out you need more how much will it cost you then?

the thing is with that screen size, and the battery life you can't miss not to watch podcasts and some movies. I myself for example use the podcast feature a lot and from my experience as a Nokia N79 user with 16GB memory card which only have 73MB free left.

Since I don't need tons of space, I just got the iPhone 3GS 16GB in white today, and I would recommend it highly. Whichever capacity you choose, you will love it. I came from an iPhone 3G, which is the same speed as the original iPhone, and the speed on the 3GS is just amazing. Its SOOO much faster. I am also impressed with the voice dialing and camera.
I'd recommend going to an Apple Store to get your 3GS, if you have one close enough. I initially ordered one online, and the wait was going to be about 9 days until delivery.
I don't recommend EVER going to an AT&T store for any reason (unless you enjoy poor customer service and long waits).

My logic for getting the 32GB is that I will no longer just produce photos, like before, I will now produce photos that are three times bigger AND video. So why not get double the amount of storage? Say you want to record something important - I'd want to have as much storage as possible just to be sure I won't run out.
Remember that the more music you have in your iPhone the longer the device will take to backup/ sync.
You want the 32GB, not just for the extra space, but also when the newer iPhone comes out at the next WWDC your 32GB one will have more value and thus you will get more money towards the newer iPhone.
