I'm a pro photographer from New Zealand and I'm considering upgrading from my Apple Macbook Black (C2D 2Ghz, 2GB, GMA 950 - I know) to a 17" unibody MBP. I currently spend a lot of time in CS4 working on raw files around 9MB in size, which when opening around 20 files for edits can become quite a slow and tedious task because of my Macbook's hardware limitations (But all things considered, it's still a brilliant machine thats two and a half years old).
I'm connected to a Dell 2408WFP currently (with the macbook acting as a second monitor), but I want to add a 3008WFP in the near future to make processing easier. Unfortunately I do not think I will be able to run a 24", 30" as well as the MBP's internal monitor which I really want to do.
I need the mobility of having a high powered machine with me with a large visual canvas, and Leopard is my operating system of choice so the MBP 17" is a lust item for me. Apples RRP At NZD5000 with (adding to it some customisation taking it to $6000 - matte screen among other things) is a extremely large price to pay, and I just want to make sure it is worth the investment.
Does anyone have experience as a media professional using the 17" that they could share light on if the investment? I don't earn enough money to be able to do this kind of thing very often at all, so it's a big decision!

Discussion about
17 MBP Unibody in a professional environment.
This post has been removed.
I follow @scottbourne who is a professional photographer. I know from his podcast chats he is very happy with the 17" MacBook Pro (mentioned it on Macbreak Weekly podcast last week) his website photofocus has one of his written reviews which may help you. Hope it's ok to post the link here photofocus.com/2009/03/31/review-of-the-17-inch-ma...
He was chatting with Alex Lindsay in the podcast last week and mentioned he was very happy plus was using it as his main computer atm this updates the date of his review.

you know you might be able to run the 24", 30", and internal with an external USB video card. They have one for Mac, a review can be seen here

Using this I think you might be able to do triple screens, but I've never actually used one of these so i'm not 100% sure.
Edit: I also found this company that has a whole range of external USB video cards that can even do up to quad displays.

That is significantly cheaper than express card solutions I have seen, thank you!

Regarding your comment about money-- you might benefit to know that the resale value on mac notebooks is very high. If you use it for a year, you can resell it for much of it's value. Look into it. You might find that you can afford to upgrade more often than you thought.
I'll Look into that, although I'm the kinda guy who thinks "the more computers the better" :P
