160 -> 120?

Is it just me, or is that going in the wrong direction? I'm one of the minority that Steve Jobs spoke about in his keynote. Apparently, the masses want less storage. Let's give it to 'em! Personally, I'm the dork who likes to walk around with as much of his music/media collection as his player can handle. Anyone else? Next iPod product launch: 320 GB classic. Mmmmm...

I have more than that, of course I technically have 2 libraries: MP3 and FLAC. With more space I can put my FLAC collection on the player. I have all the parts necessary to take full advantage of the increased sound quality and I would certainly love the portability that goes along with a FLAC library on an iPod using RockBox.

Hah. I have something like 180GB of music ripped anywhere from 192 - 256 kbps.

But it's actually excessive. I'm thinking of getting rid of a lot of it. For obvious reasons, I only listen to a fraction of my music library.

My 160GB Classic has a little over 100GB filled so far, and I get new music every month, so I'm with cmusial: I'm also in the minority whose repeat business Steve Jobs doesn't seem to want...

Yeah, I don't really understand why they eliminated the choice of 80GB or 160GB and replaced it with one in the middle...
I have an 80GB but have around 32GB free, with 35GB of music, 3GB of video and 10GB of backups from my computer.

Probably could have to do with the 120GB drivers were a better compromise of space, price, and reliability compared to the 160GB versions.

But man, could you imagine an iPod touch like device with 160GB? *drool*

Just a guess, but I think they found that the vast majority of people are not interested in a 160gb+ ipod. Yes there are a small percentage of people out there that would like it, but Apple is not going to make a ipod for small a market. I would love a 320 gb ipod, but in an ipod touch or iphone.

"but Apple is not going to make a ipod for small a market." Really? I thought that's all Apple did...and prided themselves in doing so. Apple has learned to make money as a pretty good boutique marketer of technology. Their strength is in providing the really cool stuff that no one else will (or stuff that others will eventually steal..)...I've got my 160 gb classic and love it...usually rides around half full, though if I put all of my video on it (we should stop thinking music only) I'd have more than I could carry...

that's what i'm talking about, 320gb ipod touch is what i want to see in the future. I think that's the biggest caveat as everyone's looking at it like a music-only player still. I want a full backup of my media library with me at all times!! Oh, and I do have over 300gb's of music all ripped from cd.

The 160 GB ipod still is awesome for me, since I'm old school and use it as a portable hard drive as well as an ipod. It's saved me from several scrapes with Windows, and I hate that Apple's eliminated that as a choice.

It wasn't selling well, and like most electronic devices, they are only really commercially profitable when they are in bulk. So Apple stopped selling them.
Which sucked for me, because my 160GB was stolen and my insurance company replaced it with a 120GB one :(.

According to my friend (who have research this alot), the 160 Gb version is unstable because it is using 2 stacked hard drive to achieve the 160 Gb storage size.
The newer 120 Gb is more stable as it is only using 1 hard drive for storage.

My guess is that the combination sales number and the issue above lead them to go back down abit.

Not to be to picky but Im one of those super nerdly types XD They are called platters though. 1 platter, 2 platters, etc.

Great name BTW =D

hmmm...I often go running with my 160GB strapped to my arm and never have any skipping or stability issues whatsoever.

I am with cmusial on this, I walk around with ALL my music with me, everything is encoded directly from CD's at a very high bitrate and I am closing up very fast on 120GB... I would love to see bigger capacities on future iPod Classics, and it's still my favorite version (Plus, iv'e got all the accesories and wouldn't want to replace them)

Mine is full .But that's because I want pretty much all the songs I know a touch away. You never know what you're gonna want to hear, and when you do, you'll be glad you did. Always have the right soundtrack for life.

My 160GB ipod is amost full, ad it is stable, and I bought on release day in 2007. Saying that I mainly use my 8G 4th gen nano, with smart playlists now. And a sansa clip for audiobooks and podcasts.

I am saving my ipod classic 160GB as they don't make them any morem and it is a great DAP.

Dude hopefully you have a decent pair of headphones to truly appreciate uncompressed audio or you're wasting time with this post. The vast majority of people that use iPods listen to music on those crappy tinny white earbuds that the iPod came with, and so audio quality is not important; therefore, file size can be incredibly small, and sound incredibly bad. I highly doubt we'll see anything larger than a 120GB drive.

Most of my music is no more than 128k bitstream, but between music, videos and pictures, my 160GB iPod is almost full. There's a lot to be said for being able to pull up that exact song, video or picture on a single portable device.

I do enjoy my 160GB iPod. The only unstability has been if I unplug it without "Ejecting" it first. Screwed it up a few times.
If you were using it for Video I could see it filling up pretty fast. I like the freedom to encode my MP3s at a higher bitrate and not worry about space concerns.
That being said, I have 10,000 songs and it's not even half full, so I could probably live with a 120 for awhile if i had to.

I had an 80gb model. When I bought it, I thought it was plenty of space. Now I have a 160gb model and I'm using 105gb, and I buy around 15-20 albums a month. I'm wondering what I'm going to do when I've filled my 160gb iPod. I've heard the rumours that the iPod classic could disappear completely. I hope that does not happen. I want a bigger iPod, not a smaller one. I expect we'll end up with bigger iPod Touch models as flash memory gets bigger and cheaper.

The biggest reason for discontinuing the 160GB was that no one (comparatively speaking) bought it for $100 more. Of course, when Apple upgraded the storage they realized that they could save costs and discontinue the high end classic. For 1.8" drives there is are 2 standard heights. (1 or 2 platters) The 160GB was a thicker drive (and why such a size was never in the MacBook Air).

I don't really use an ipod for day to day use any more. My Samsung Omnia phone has 16GB's of storage so that's fine for day to day music use.

But I LOVE having a 160GB ipod that allows me to carry my ENTIRE music collection when I go travelling or to parties, picnics etc..

So even though its not exactly necessary for everyday use, there is a place for huge storage music devices. There are times when its nice to have all your music with you.

With the cost of hard drives being so cheap, I have no idea why they stopped making the 160. I Love my 160.
I just wish the ZuneHD and Ipod Touches would come out with at least a 100.
But it does seem apparent that MS and Apple want to stay as far away from Moving parts as possible.
I would not be surprised if Apple made an announcement of a 64gb touch, along with the discontinuation of all ipods with hard drives (on September 9th). Just a guess.

I've always had more music than I can fit on my iPod. Now I have an iPhone it's even harder.
With the release of Spotify mobile that does become less of an issue. I just wish there was a way to replicate my iTunes library in Spotify. I've only found one tool and that doesn't accept my XML file as it's too big :(

I love my 160GB iPod Classic, I have around 6,000 songs and to many movies and tv shows to count. It's nice to have every thing on one device for trips, other wise I use my iPhone.
