10.8 vs 10.6

I have a 2010 27'' iMac that's still running Snow Leopard. The reason I chose not to upgrade to Lion was because I legitimately couldn't take it seriously. To me, it seemed fit to run on an iPad, or maybe an 11'' Air! Not my iMac, which I needed for serious tasks like Java development and photo/video editing! However, this is getting out of date and I will be buying a 15'' Pro, which will come with 10.8. Any thoughts about how this works for more serious tasks and not just social networking? Lion seemed to me like Apple made it easier to do simple tasks, and made it hard to access features most users don't utilize. What do you think, what do you use Lion/ML for, and do you think all this social/ease of use stuff is helpful or gets in the way?

I use a lot of Office (*sad face*) and Aperture really day-to-day. My MBP is a little over a year old so I upgraded not long after Lion came out thinking "what the hell". I like it. I did prefer some of the older gestures which were in SL, but overall I do really like it and I'll be getting ML in a couple of weeks after they iron out some of the last few bugs that will inevitably pop-up. Also, depending if people see a hit on battery life!

None of the "features" have really got in the way for me, shifting from SL to Lion. For example I really like the "natural" scrolling, but if you don't it's just one tick box in the settings. The removal of permanent scroll bars could be an issue for speed, but I like the way they fade away and you can just hover over to bring them back.

I hate launchpad, so I just never use it and have kept the dashboard key as the dashboard key!

They only things I'm really looking forward to are dictation and notification centre. (Love the notifications in the new Ubuntu and used Growel a tiny bit before).

I use spaces a lot more not with Lion. Never really bothered with them before but now use multiple virtual all the time. This helps with full-screen apps, also not minimising stuff works well as one MASSIVE drawback of Lion was that Mission Control made it harder to find minimised windows over old school Exposé. Exposé still exists but only for one programme at a time.

The inbuilt spell check is actually a really nice touch which you don't think about most of the time. Also, the 3-fingure tap on a word to access the dictionary is nice. Little things like that were just nice touches, nothing major.
