Conclusion: We're mixed

The Genie from DirecTV is their newest whole-house DVR solution, and features 1TB of storage and the ability to record up to 5 HD shows at one time. The Genie works by utilizing wireless technology so that each additional TV in the house doesn't need a full DVR, just a Genie Mini that connects back to the main Genie. With 5 tuners capable of recording HD content, that 1TB could fill up quickly, but Wired says the opposite, stating the "drive never filled up after a month of testing, usually clocking in at about 40 percent capacity ". Engadget noted "navigating the interface feels snappy, but we did notice lag from time to time." Wired also experienced the occasional slowdown, stating that " the Genie interface itself responded slowly to remote clicks." Despite these occasional hiccups, Engadget goes on to say the "Genie delivers in all the right ways," so if you're currently a DirecTV customer or are unhappy with your cable company's current DVR offerings, an upgrade or switch may be in order. However, if you're interested in a DVR service that provides place-shifting ability on top of a whole-home DVR then consider a switch to Dish to use their Hopper with Sling.

The DirecTV Genie delivers in all the right ways, so much so that it provides a reason to switch providers. Of course, user experience isn't everything and there are many other reasons to choose a provider; price, local availability, service, support and picture quality to name a few.

In the end, the Genie is worth the expense if you really care about not missing any of the newest shows. But if you’re more interested in the place-shifting features, or if you want to save an extra 10 bucks a month, the DISH Hopper with Sling has it beat.

For homes like mine with a lot of TVs, maybe a combination of the Genie with one or two separate HD DVRs makes the most sense, offering the best attributes of each. Those with fewer TVs will likely choose one or the other.

I have had this thing for about a day. I'm still learning my way around it, but I'm reasonably happy. We moved from a TiVo Series 2. Pros - 1 Huge technological jump for us. The interface is fast, smooth, and reasonably intuitive. 2 The Whole-Home feature is brilliant. Cons - 1 Genie...

I was a DVR holdout. I refused to pay endless monthly fees for a "service" that merely provided what I had already...a program guide. Plus, I had a DVD recorder...coupled with DVD-RW discs, I recorded shows to my heart's delight. Well, HD changed all that. We still recorded HD receiver content...
