Conclusion: We're mixed

At almost 5 pounds, the XPS 14 strains the definition of an Ultrabook, and this is definitely not a laptop you'll want to carry around all day -- despite the fact that its good battery life means you just might be able to. That weight, and its premium price, make the XPS 14 a tough sell. It's not a bad laptop, and it'll handle most day-to-day applications. But when you can get ligher, well-configured 14-inch Ultrabooks like the Lenovo X1 Carbon for around the same price, it's hard to find a reason to choose the XPS 14 instead.

If you absolutely need a premium, all-around PC laptop right now, then yes, drop (at least) $1100 on an XPS 14. But if you can afford to be patient, it may be worth waiting to see what comes later this fall.

The Dell XPS 14 is one of the longest lasting Ultrabooks yet and features Nvidia graphics, but the relatively heavy weight and high price give us pause.

Overall a great laptop. Offers the best performance with i7 CPU, 8G RAM, and the Geforce Graphics for the price (=$1,500). However, considering how heavy it is, it doesn't come with an optical drive. Also, I am bothered by the terrible palm rejection. The touch pad that keeps reading my palm as...
