Conclusion: We like it

Windows Ultrabooks have yet to emerge from the shadow of the Macbook Air, but with models like the Dell XPS 13, they're starting to do so. The XPS 13 is a solidly built, lightweight laptop that's actually slightly smaller than the 13-inch Air. It has a usable, backlit keyboard and decent battery life. While it loses points for a low-end display, its $999 price point makes it a reasonable purchase as a more powerful go-anywhere computer to replace your aging netbook.

From the moment it comes out of the box the XPS 13 looks and feels like a truly premium product and, with a nice keyboard and respectable performance, it's a nice machine to use, too. But, the display suffers the same complaints we've seen with other Ultrabooks in this price range

With better display quality, it would be a slam-dunk. Unfortunately, the middling resolution, iffy color reproduction, and poor off-axis viewing leave a considerable stain on what would otherwise be a five-star product.

the Dell XPS 13 would be spectacular; as is, if you don't mind carrying a dongle or two, it's an ultra-small, ultra-sophisticated choice that shoots to the top of ultrabook shopping lists.

This is a good product at a reasonable price point that basically just needs a refresh. If you're in the market for an ultrabook I wouldn't dissuade you from going with the XPS 13, but I might advise you to really examine how you're going to use it and do some shopping around first.

The bottom line: Attractive and compact, the new Dell XPS 13 ultrabook isn't that much different from last year's model, aside from new processors and a higher-res non-touch screen.

If style, processing power and portability are among your top considerations in a Windows laptop, the Dell XPS 13 Ultraportable should be in your short list.

The last Windows laptop I bought was a Lenovo X220 (which I love, but isn't the lightest machine around) and this has over time become my Linux machine. I between I've bought and extensively used both the Samsung Series 7 Slate and the Microsoft Surface RT. I also use frequently use a Chomebook...

It's my first review, but I've used a lot of Dell Windows laptops in my day. This one is by far my favorite. Its small, fast and not bad looking. I've used this laptop as a step in minimalizing my laptop bag I usually carry around. It fits into a smaller bag, the battery lasts longer and it's...
