The X5 may not appeal to the mainstream. It is showing its age with a less refined design and interface compared to newer players. But it will definitely appeal to anyone whose primary concern is sound quality or “hackability.” If you’re looking for a no-nonsense audio player with great sound quality and are into tweaking lots of settings, then the X5 is for you.

i had the X5L version of this for almost 4 years, and it served me well. when i first bought it, i could wow everybody with the awesome features it had, like a microphone, and a color screen. and it played video, which was an amazing feat back in the day. the 40-hour battery kept me going through... I got it for ogg support. It had that and a crap tonne more features. video, fm radio, fm and voice recording, text file viewer, image viewer.
